When i go to send a message, the letters are disappearing as i type. For instance, if I’m trying to text my MOTHER, by the time i get to the h, the “mot” has erased, and all of my H contacts are populating! This is super frustrating and i can’t seem to find any info. Anyone?? And sometimes i can’t type more than 2 letters before it happens.
I found a solution that worked. Go to Settings > iCloud > Contacts. Turn off Contacts, keep on your phone, and then turn your Contacts back on and merge. There is clearly a bug on iOS with the Contacts app, where data is erroring out when being loaded into the Messages app. This is why you will see some group text contact photos “flicker” and why when you type a contact while composing a message it also “resets” (errors out). The text “resets” at the same rate as the contact photos flickering. Simply toggling the iCloud > Contacts off/on fixes this.
Mine disappears as I type in the search section of iMessage. I would like to search for a text from a certain person and I type one letter it allows it, if I try to type a second letter the entire thing dissapears.

Hmm but now everything keeps freezing, very frustrating, have only just bought this iPad and Apple aren’t exactly on my doorstep.

Holy ****! Thank you! I've been dealing with this issue for years and finally fixed it based on your suggestion. I almost switched to android over this. I guess iCloud is not fast enough to search and retrieve my contacts. Thank you again!
This does not work. Turning it off and merging afterwards does nothing. Did that with my 8+. Still the text in iMessage while trying to write the recipent is disappearing after 1-3 letters. I am turning the phone off and then on and it is repaired for a day or shorter. It is comming back afterwards. My iPhone is practically as factory as possible with the newest iOS. Still can’t write my iMessage or sms as I could before. Solution?
I too suffer from the disappearing letters when I try to type in a contact to message. I had a new iPhone 8. I finally took it back to Apple and they did all the usual stuff by wiping it clean and restoring it and it still happened! They finally gave me a new phone and a few months later it happened again. They told me it was a bug in my contacts. I have cleaned up all my contacts and it still isn't fixed. What a nuisance to have to do all this. I will try turning off iCloud contacts as suggested. Nice to hear I'm not the only one who has this problem. It's very frustrating!
Same thing with my iPhone X. Tried everything - exiting. Shuting down. Very frustrating. Pay way too much for this to go on. Needs fix ASAP.
I have the same problem while using messaging - even after reboot; come on Apple fix this issue.
I am having a problem with letters and #’s disappearing as I type, , for instance, if I’m typing in a number to text back to a number, the first one disappears and all subsequent #’s as well!
I think it has something to do with typing “th” quickly. It happens to me all the time. Like just now, when i typed all THE time.
