iPhone X GPS not working

I have tried all the of the restarting the location services, updating, all of it, and the GPS is still intermittent at best. Is there a fix for this on the $1000 phone?

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.1

Thought I'd add my experience.

No matter which GPS App I use on my iPhone X, it can't hold a lock on my position when driving, rendering it useless to me. GPS is what I primary use my phone for. Placed conveniently behind my steering wheel between the odometer and speedometer. My previous iPhone 4 and 6 never had this problem. I am starting to doubt this is a software issue and, by the sound of it, swapping the phone at Apple is probably futile as others have found. Given some time Apple might find a solution in software, otherwise I'll wait until a new hardware revision has come out and use my warranty to get a replacement. Maybe then the GPS will be fixed.

I bought the phone on the 8th of December 2017. As of day 1 I cannot use my GPS. Not happy Apple. The reasons why I bought this phone are my iPhone 6 kicked the bucket and my partner gifted me an Apple Watch, and as we know those things only work with iPhones. :/

Greetings yurkennis,

Item (a.) Use the search function (Google it). Your phone model number is listed in your "Settings/General" and crossable (via Google) to the specific number: A1865, A1901, A1902.

Item (b.) You are correct!

There is no specific claim (that I have found thus far) that the Intel modem is causing the GPS issue we are discussing here.

The issue is clearly Bluetooth related/the inability of the iphone X to toggle GPS and Bluetooth connectivity simultaneously. I think this bc the only way I can get my GPS to work in my car is to connect it via internal UBS port which connects the phone directly to my stereo via iPod setting. This is the only way I can get both my GPS to work and have the directions announced. Crazy. They must know about this problem by now?!

Try connecting your phone directly into the car stereo via UBS port or aux cord then launch Google maps or Waze. This is the only way I have been able to use GPS on my iPhone x in my car (2017 Cayenne.) The issue seems to be with Bluetooth and GPS cancelling each other out since neither works simultaneously. The UBS port overrides the Bluetooth signal and allows GPS to work. Let me know if this works for you. I also think the latest software update 11.2.6 should have a fix.

Under 11.2.6, there are times when the problem does not happen for me but it's definitely not fixed. I am working with Apple and it's been escalated to engineering. They took logs of a failure event and we're waiting to hear a conclusion.

Very unusual and difficult problem. Apparently it is very rare. Not much solace for the 100-some-odd people here who have clicked "me too" on this but I can at least confirm that it's getting attention at Apple.

Rare? That's the false narrative they want you to believe.

I have had two iPhone X in a row and BOTH had the exact same problem.

Additionally, the "no GPS while moving" issue is currently being complained about on numerous other iPhone and Mac forums so it's not as "rare" as they'd like you to believe.

The fact that the technical problem exists does not bother me at all. I fully understand the engineering side of the equation. What aggravates me is being treated as if the GPS issue does NOT exist and "I" am the defective component in all of this.

* In spite of my frustration I have no doubt Apple will get this issue put to bed and the next rendition of their 'X' phone will be perfect. ✅

moe52,

Please keep us posted on your progress on the GPS issue. 🙂

Electrojake, I am also on my second iPhone X for the same problem. Soon I will be getting a third iPhone X from apple as a replacement. I have a feeling that the GPS will still not work. I can only guess at what is really wrong with these phones. All I know is that there is definitely something faulty in the phone and Apple has absolutely no solution other than to keep switching out phones until the one year warranty runs out.

Replacing the phones hasn't helped several (most?) of us -- it's an interaction with the radio environment. In my case the GPS fails in one car, only that car, and only when it's powered up. Works fine everywhere else and in other cars; and my other iPhones work fine in that car.

That's how I know it's a rare problem: Every Apple tech I talked to (five, of which three were senior) had not seen this and did not at first find anything in their internal database. The fact that they are replacing phones still tells me they still don't understand it. Even this thread has gathered just 139 "me too" clicks and at iPhone volumes, that is rare. My case is in engineering now....

So I drive a Hyundai Sonata 2013 Hybrid. I had the car in to get the oil change and asked the people behind the desk if they have been hearing any issues like this happening, and they have. They said that there is something in Apple's newest updates that is causing the Bluetooth waves from some Hyundai cars and some Dodge cars to block the GPS signal from the iPhone X and iPhone 8 at times. They aren't sure why, or which cars specifically, but it is a problem that the dealerships know about. So I asked them if they could just disable the bluetooth in the car and I will just use the usb cable to connect the phone. So far, this has worked. Two days of testing out my GPS and not once has it stopped working. Yes, I lose the ability to bluetooth connect, but at least I am not getting lost any more, and hopefully someday, Apple or the car makers will figure out what specifically is getting blocked and can patch it. Hope this helps more than just me, because this is a bigger issue that just the 151 who have comment here. Most people aren't finding this a problem until they use their GPS in specific cars, despite having this phone for months now.

Yes, seems to be a Bluetooth conflict with specific cars but variable. I asked on a BMW forum and no one with my make and model (2005 Z4) reported anything like it. I am considering disconnecting my car's Bluetooth (which is so crappy I never use it anyway) but need to figure out how.

By the way, there are great third-party Bluetooth adapters from VicTsing for under $20. They have great reviews. Here's one: Amazon.com: VicTsing V4.2 + EDR Bluetooth FM Transmitter for Car, One Key Button, Wireless Car Stereo Radio with Dual US…

I am having the same issue and have a few interesting points to add about my discoveries with this issue.

First, I drive a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. I am on iPhone X #5, yes #5!! And on 11.2.6 and still having issue which I had from day one of the first phone. I am using a slim otterbox case and have found an improved gps signal if I take phone out of case, but still cuts out but at least half as less as with case on. Secondly, if I touch my phone, just the corner of the phone, the gps signal catches! This works every time when I see the no gps signal message from Waze.

What I wanna see if there are signal reception improvement stickers or something I can attach to the phone holding fixture in my car. None the less, it’s annoying to have to touch my phone to keep a solid gps signal. I’ve owned iPhone 7 and 6 in this same car and NEVER had any gps issues
