Frequent kernel panic in IONVMeController.cpp

On my Late 2013 Macbook Pro Retina, I've recently upgraded the SSD to an OWC Aura Pro X, reinstalled macOS 10.13.2 and migrated all settings and data from the previous SSD with Migration Assistant. Since the reinstall of macOS the mouse sometimes gets very laggy and keyboard input only arrives with some delay, just like a system running at 100% CPU with higher priority than the user input threads. When shutting down/rebooting to continue working as normal I always get the following kernel panic:

*** Panic Report ***

Any ideas if the SSD Upgrade is likely to be the root cause or if it's something unrelated that rather stems form the OS reinstall and/or migration of settings? System on the original SSD was installed as Mountain Lion (I think) and continuously updated all the way to 10.13.2 over the years.

Cheers, Lothar

I have nothing to add other than I just experienced this exact sequence of events on my newly installed Aura Pro X. I'm also seeing an issue where the computer will reboot when you let the system go into standby / deep sleep / hibernate (sleep for 3+ hours while off AC power). I already called OWC about that issue and they said they're working with Apple on a fix but no ETA...

I'm really starting to regret purchasing this drive from OWC. I also bought a demo model to save a little money and they're refusing to allow me to return it for a refund.

I would like to add myself to the group of people having this kernel panic with the Aura Pro X. My computer will run fine for a week, then get so slow it can't function, during the attempt at a restart it kernel panics. Has anyone found a resolution? I've been working with OWC and their solutions were to reset SMC, PRAM (which I had done) and then also to do a fresh install of the OS, which I'm not exactly thrilled to get into. Hopefully someone will chime in with a solution?

I haven't found one myself. The kernel panics and other failures became less frequent when I updated to macOS 10.13.2 and then to 10.13.3. However the failure pattern that you describe (dramatically slower performance followed by this kernel panic on reboot) is the one that still occurs. Sometimes it's after a day. More frequently it takes a week or two. The improvements make me wonder if the problem is due to the Aura Pro X or due to the combination of High Sierra and my late-2013 MBP. I've seen other lag/performance complaints about this OS/MBP combination independent of the Aura Pro X although not with this particular panic.

I'm in the same position with OWC as well. Doing a fresh OS install and running with just that as they requested isn't a realistic option while this is my only Mac. I may see if it's possible to back down to Sierra on it after I arrange a replacement machine.

So I finally returned the Aura Pro X and got myself a Transcend JetDrive 825 (same as the 820, just with a case for external use). Works without issues since a few days now. It's a bit slower than the Aura, but does not require a cooling pad and seems to use only little more energy than the original Apple/Samsung SSD (which says 3.3V/2.5A on it's sticker while the JetDrive has 3.3V/3A max.) I'll still have to enable FileVault as the ultimate stress test, thought.

Oh, and the JetDrive turned out to be ~10€ cheaper and comes with a nicer and faster external case (using Thunderbolt, not USB3).

Mar 9, 2018 11:06 PM in response to lhaeger

I had a simlar experience. Kernel panics (4 or 5 a day) under 10.13.3 with new Aura Pro X 2TB - clean install on a Mac Pro 2013. It seemed to happen most when the I/O was maxed out downloading apps from app store and uploading files to Dropbox.

I went on the OWC chat line (they did ask me if I had tried to troubleshoot the panic log with an implication that they would help in this). However, in the 1st instance they suggested resetting SMC and PRAM. Resetting the SMC made no diference (in fact I had a kernel panic on reboot), but resetting the the PRAM seems to have fixed it (fingers crossed 48 hours of intensive I/O and no panic). To confuse matters I also disabled "put hard disks to sleep when possible" soon after so it could be that !!!

OWC advice:

Chas B (08/03/2018, 21:02:36): SMC for the machine is just pulling the power cable for about 20-30 seconds and then plugging back in.

Chas B (08/03/2018, 21:02:38): PRAM Steps:

1. Power off machine.

2. Hold Command + Option + P + R

3. Power machine on with the keys held.

4. Hold until your machine reboots 4 times, then let go.

5. Boot normally

EDIT

I have since read Rasputins426's post. Maybe it was unchecking the "put hard disks to sleep when possible"
