iPhone X and Using External Microphone.

I am trying to use an external microphone on my iPhone X via the fire jack and adapter that came with the phone. I am using Filmic Pro app. But the phone is not recognizing the external input. Same thing is happening when I try to use the external mic and the native camera app.

Any suggestions as to where I'm going wrong?

Thanks

John

The solution is to buy this adaptor which has a TRRS ring on it. You plug your external microphone into the adaptor and the adaptor into the iPhone white audio to lightning adaptor that came with your iPhone X.

It seems like this is a common issue, and i have come to save the day! This issue has costed me my sanity, hundreds of dollars, and some hair. Don't listen to anyone on this forum saying "this device is not supported" they simply have not figured out the solution. The way I see it, there are either two ways you can get around this problem. It seems that if you are on this page you have already tried connecting an apple lightning to headphone jack adapter with no success. Well...thats because its a headphone adapter and not a mic input. Anyway, solution one would be to but a "iPhone 8 mic set" which can run you a pretty penny and possibly your sanity. The other solution is my way... Start with a lightning to camera adapter, connect a sabrent usb to sound adapter, then connect your mic set. One note though... PLEASE make sure that your mic input is a TRS cable and NOT A TRRS. This will not connect. if you have a TRRS cable you need a TRRS to TRS converter cable. Good Luck my friends.

I recently purchased an iPhone 8 and had a similar concern with the Filmic Pro app.

I tested my Rode VideoMic in Filmic, connected via the SC4 TRS-TRRS Adaptor and Belkin 3.5 mm Audio + Charge RockStar. Once the 'audio in' is set to "Headset Microphone" (it should auto-detect) everything works just fine.

You don't need the Belkin Rockstar if you don't care about charging your device while shooting. Your standard Apple Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter should work just fine.

Hope this helps.

Hi Guys, I thought had the same issue when I tried to connect the Rode Videomic to my iPhone X. Based on one of the suggestions provided, I found out that:

  1. The voice is being recorded while using the video camera and the rode mic. You just have to remove the lightening connection of the Rode mic to hear the playback of the recording. Or u can connect a earphones to the end of the rode mic and u can hear everything.

I've tested multiple external microphones with multiple configurations on the iphone X and have nothing but problems. Whether I'm using the included 3.5mm to lightning adapter, lightning specific microphones (such as the Shure MV88), or a lightning to USB adapter with USB mics, all of them have issues. Problems range from audio interference, audio glitches, complete dropouts, or no audio at all.

The only company that seems to acknowledge this problem is Shure who claims there is an issue with the newer iphones (Shure on Twitter: "Unfortunately, this is an issue that Apple introduced with the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and …).

Never had any problems with external microphones on my older iphone 6S other than minor interference issues that could be solved by switching to airplane mode but the iphone X has been a totally different story so far. Hope that a future iOS update will solve these problems.

For those that want to try, note that this is not any cable you got out of your local electronics store, this is a TRRS or 4 poles, otherwise it may not work, I ordered one and if I don't reply back it worked. On Amazon search for Headphone Splitter, ARCHEER 4 Poles Poles 3.5mm Y Splitter Stereo Headset Adapter 3.5mm Male to 2 Female Audio Cable for Earphone, Headset Splitter Adapter Extension Aux Cable, Compatible iPhone, Tablets, MP3 Player - 0.5M. Good luck.

Have you seen this solution? How to Add a Wireless Microphone to iPhone 7, iPhone 8, or iPhone X - YouTube

I ended up buying the recommended Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter - Apple and had already purchased a Amazon.com: SYBA external USB Stereo Sound Adapter for Windows, Mac, Linux Extra Audio Source with Microphone SD-CM-UAUD…

I used this combination over the weekend with my condenser mic with great results.

The next issue will be to resolve audio latency during livestreams with this setup.

A stereo microphone is not going to work with the 3.5 mm to Lightning adapter. The 3.5 mm jack is stereo out for headphones, but only mono for microphone input. The microphone input needs an extra contact on the plug. A normal 3.5 mm stereo plug does not have that extra contact and there will be nothing sent to the phone.

Look for a stereo microphone or adapter that has a Lightning plug. There are several out there.

I recently watched a video on YouTube about hooking up a lavalier microphone to an iPhone X. His solution was to first plug in the Apple camera connection adapter to the lightning port, then plug in a Sabrent USB audio adapter to the USB end of the camera adapter, then plug in your lavalier mic to the mic port on the USB audio adapter. A bit of a roundabout way to accomplish hooking up a mic to the iPhone X, but it makes sense.
