I am trying to use an external microphone on my iPhone X via the fire jack and adapter that came with the phone. I am using Filmic Pro app. But the phone is not recognizing the external input. Same thing is happening when I try to use the external mic and the native camera app.
Any suggestions as to where I'm going wrong?

The solution is to buy this adaptor which has a TRRS ring on it. You plug your external microphone into the adaptor and the adaptor into the iPhone white audio to lightning adaptor that came with your iPhone X.

While Apple may not have designed their phones to work with external peripherals, that doesn't mean manufacturers aren't designing products specifically for them. Just have a look at some of the products they sell directly on their website (microphone - Apple). These are external lightning accessories made specifically for iPhones and their new phone models just don't support these accessories very well at all (if it all). Not to mention these are all supposedly "Apple MFi (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) Certified compatible with all iOS devices equipped with a Lightning connector."
Using a Y cable if you're just using a standard 3.5mm from the microphone split the input for you.
Iphone --> Lightning Connector --> Lightning to 3.5mm Stereo Adatper --> Stereo Male Y Cable 3.5mm --> Mono 3.5mm Female --> Mono 3.5mm Male --> Mono 3.5mm Male --- 3.5mm Female at the back of the micrphone like this setup in the picture. In the Filmic Pro app it will appear as Headphone Microphone

I could be wrong here bit I think I troubleshoot the problem and have filmic pro identifying my rode microphone. Also made the video clear for people using a gimbal like myself. Let me know if this is helpful for you.

My brother found a workaround using FiLMiC Pro where he connected the adapter cable without the microphone plugged in first then launch the app and tried to detect hardware been plugged in the microphone

Make sure you plug all the cable together first before you connect the lightning cable to the iPhone. Tested and works on iPhone X
Yes, the adapters work. In this thread it is explained why. You need 4 bands in the adapter, not the 3 that comes with the usual lightning adapters.
