Migration Assistant from Windows 10 PC to iMac fails

Hi,

I am trying to migrate data using Migration Assistant (MA) from a Windows 10 PC to a brand new iMac running High Sierra (via an ethernet cable) without any joy. After disabling Windows firewallI and quitting all apps I started Windows MA and then boot the iMac. After answering the initial questions (language, keyboard, etc.) the MA window displays. After selecting the transfer from PC option, I see my Windows PC icon displayed and then hit Continue, which results in the error message, "Unable to connect. "(name of PC)" could not be reached. Ensure both computers are on and connected to the same network." I get the same message whether the ethernet cable is connected directly to both machines or via a router.

I then completed the iMac setup without transferring data and then started MA and get the same result. I then did a clean startup of the PC (as suggested in another post) and that resulted in not seeing the PC at all in the Mac MA window. The Windows MA had a message about not being able to initialise Bonjour, so I did another clean startup with Bonjour. I could then see my PC icon displayed in the iMac MA window, but when I hit Continue I get the same "Unable to Connect" error.

Because I can see the PC icon in the iMac Migration Assistant window, it makes me think I need to do something on the Windows side.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Dennis.

Hi Allen A,

Thank you for your suggestion. I had seen the article you recommended and followed everything it suggested. Still no luck. I tried re-downloading and installing Migration Assistant (MA) for Windows and restarting both the PC and iMac. Didn't work. I still get the "Unable to Connect" error. In desperation, I even downloaded the previous version of the MA, but of course that didn't work.

Short of other suggestions, it looks like I'll have to manually transfer everything. I wanted to avoid that because I'm using Windows Live Mail which requires conversion of the mailboxes to mbox format to work with Apple Mail. There are applications that do that but they cost money. There are free applications that will do the same thing but you can't do a batch conversion and I have lots of mailboxes. Sigh.

Sorry for the rant. It's just very frustrating. I'm really keen to start using my lovely new iMac.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

Cheers,

Dennis.

Hello dabohaze1957,

I understand from your post you're having issues with migrating contents and data from your PC to your Mac using Migration Assistant.
I have the perfect article for that issue. Take a look at the article below and particularly the first section titled Before you Begin: Move your data from a Windows PC to your Mac
It contains some things to check and run before beginning the Migration.

Keep us posted on your progress.
Cheers!
