You don't buy the battery but pay for the complete service. Apple or an authorized service provider will only replace the battery in exchange for your current battery.
I'd make an appointment at an Apple Store. where they'll run a diagnostic and then place you on a list. This is the way I recommend doing it:
- Start here: https://support.apple.com/iphone/repair
- Click on "Start your repair request" (blue button at the bottom).
- Click on "Battery, Power & Charging".
- Click on "Battery Replacement".
- Then click on "Bring in for Repair". You have to select a carrier, but it doesn't really matter.
You then can select any number of different Apple Stores or AASPs. I recommend an Apple Store because you know what the price will be (currently $29). Each AASP may charge its own labor rate, although quite a few are matching Apple's flat $29 rate.

The information you seek is on the warranty legal page. The opening by any 3rd party, or installation of non-Apple parts will void the warranty and Apple will no longer support the device.

Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store for evaluation. The instructions have been given repeatedly in this thread.
Make an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. They can run diagnostics and determine the cause of the overheating. I'd recommend taking your cable and adapter with you as well.
