I had this very problem with my Apple TV Gen 2.

By far the easiest 'it just works' solution for me was to install the 'Air Remote Free' App on my Samsung Tablet and use this to learn another remote. The app has annoying ads, but you only need to use it once, so not really an issue.

It does of course depend on you having access to a suitable android device.

Hi

Yes, but the android app appears no different to the aluminium remote, so it works just fine without any purchase, so long as you have a suitable android device. I realise the OP has an iPhone X, but this does not exclude having an android device also.

I have Samsung Galaxy Tab S, and with this app I could configure any Apple TV out of the box with no network connection required.

I know it works because I have done this twice now.

I make this suggestion because this is the only one that worked for me without purchasing or borrowing an actual Apple TV remote.

Hi,

Yes, I was fortunate that my Samsung has IR. Many androids do, but obviously not all of them.

I notice that IR transmitters that run from the headphone socket of most iPhones or Androids (obviously not the lightning port though) are available on eBay for next to nothing (about 2GBP).

These work with an app called ZaZaRemote to turn your phone into a universal remote with a database of 70,000 devices. I downloaded the app, and Apple TV is there.

I cannot personally vouch for it as I have not tested it, but I shall order an IR transmitter tonight and report back the results (good or bad) to this thread for the benefit of future people with this problem. If itvworks then it is a useful device to have for so little money.

The likelihood of one having an ATV and using android isn't big to begin with, and a lot will not have IR. In some cases someone in the house may have one but once you have to go elsewhere to borrow a phone to download a 3rd party app and possibly run into the situation again it makes more sense to just get the remote for $20

There are additional costs to consider when purchasing from those vendors plus the extra time and hassle going through that method, and even if it were to work for one it may not guarantee success in all cases.

Hi

I understand completely what you are saying, but if the question to a support forum is ‘how do I control my Apple TV without my remote’ the OP is probably hoping for an answer other than ‘buy another remote’.

This is the same situation that I found myself in, and I fixed it that very same evening without purchasing anything, so I know it might be helpful to others. There is is good chance that an iPhone X owner is the sort of person who likes to keep right up to date and has a bunch of ‘old tech’ sitting around somewhere.

Anyway, so long as we are both trying to help then lets agree that all solutions have some merit, and only the OP can choose which is most relevent to their situation. To me, an ‘only $20’ remote that I will only use for 5 minutes and possibly never need again is expensive. To the OP maybe my suggestions are just too much hassle to save $20.

So long as we both helped someone then everyone is happy.

:)
