My iMac currently says I am running OS X version 10.9.5. I downloaded macOS High Sierra and the app store page indicates that High Sierra was installed. Upon start the mac is still loading OS X. How do I load High Sierra? In the past the OS updates have auto loaded.

That means the installer was installed. But, you haven't run the installer, yet. It is likely running in the background waiting for you to continue the install. If it is not, open it from the Applications folder.
I have never once had an OS install on its own.
Updates generally install automatically if you have that set, but an OS Upgrade does not.

Thank you for your respons. I did find it in the applications folder and started the install. I then got the “can not connect to the Recovery Server” message. I switched from slow WiFi connection to my cellular data and completed the install. It took 5 gigs of data but completed. Thank you again.

Thank you. That did the trick for me, too. Normally I just follow the instructions on the screen and run the installer (click the icon) when it says to, rather than going to the Applications folder. Maybe I missed the instructions
