App store indicated macOS High Sierra installed but the current version running is OS X 10.9.5 how do i get High Sierra to load upon start up?

My iMac currently says I am running OS X version 10.9.5. I downloaded macOS High Sierra and the app store page indicates that High Sierra was installed. Upon start the mac is still loading OS X. How do I load High Sierra? In the past the OS updates have auto loaded.

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), iOS 10, OS X 10.9.5

That means the installer was installed. But, you haven't run the installer, yet. It is likely running in the background waiting for you to continue the install. If it is not, open it from the Applications folder.

I have never once had an OS install on its own.

Updates generally install automatically if you have that set, but an OS Upgrade does not.
