I have a flashing light, there was some whirring screeching noice with the device. I have unplugged it but but before then I got an airport utility message that it was overheating.
Mac OS X (10.0.x)

I would presume it is the latest model?
How old is it? If it is in warranty take it straight to apple for replacement.
If out of warranty does it fall under applecare?? Up to 3 years.. it is covered under the applecare on iPad, computer or appleTV.. apart from some questionable practices in some countries where the plain text of the T&C is ignored.
Outside of that.. it is faulty.. perhaps..
Faulty Fan
Faulty Sensor
Faulty Power Supply.
Any of which can be fixed if you are a DIYer but is not worth commerical interest.
Sometimes the very simplest thing.. having file sharing turned on when it is not used..
Make sure it is off.. do a factory reset and reconfigure from scatch and hope for the best.
