.peg file Photos fail to import - workaround

Jan 2018 - posting this as multiple queries for .peg files unresolved and still an issue in 2018 for (slightly) older Mac hardware and iOS.

iPad 2 Cellular (late) on iOS 9.3.5 to MacBookPro on OS 10.11.6

Photos app on the desktop Mac fails to import a dozen images which are screen grabs made on the iPad itself. Photos app shows the images (thumbnails) in the import window but then reports the files as having extension .peg and corrupt / cannot import.

The files are not corrupt and are in fact standard jpgs created by the iPad / Apple iOS (using click home / start button). To get them on to the Mac go to Applications / Image capture - in the left window select the iPad (or other device), select the images and import. They will go by default to your (user) Images folder on the Mac. They will land here as .jpg files and open in Preview.
