iphone X screen goes black during call

My iPhone X screen goes black during a call and the only way to wake it up is to start shutting off the phone, which ends the call. Is there a fix for this?

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5

There is a proximity sensor (above the receiver at the top) on all iPhones. That sensor, when you hold your device close to your ear, make the screen black and unresponsive, so that you cannot touch anything inadvertently.

When you remove the iphone from your ear, the screen should come back and respond to your touch.

Coming to your issue:

Check if the proximity sensor is not obstructed (even partially) by a case and/or a screen protector.

Shouldn't be this case, that sensor could be defective and, since your iphone is brand new and covered by warranty, contact your nearest Apple Store and have your iPX inspected.

The iPhone X is “SUPPOSED to go dark and become unresponsive” when you put it up to your ear. I feel it is reasonable to believe that a high end phone is “

SUPPOSED” to stop being dark and once again become responsive when removed from the proximity of one’s head.

I have experienced two events

since my last post where rhe proximity sensor feature failed to allow the phone to respond . In both instances, removing it from the case and lightly cleaning around the screen camera and ear speaker with a clean dry cloth have cleared the issue.

Hope this straightened out any missunderstandings and the solution works for anyone experiencing this type of trouble.

it happens to me when I use the 3D touch with the app by phone and I call a person I have among the favorites; initially the device freezes, the app does not respond to pressure and does not even work the touch to change the page at home.
if I approach the phone to my ear, it becomes black but does not return to normal after the call, remains black.
however the phone is on, the notifications arrive.
I have to do a forced restart.
it does so rarely but it happens, it's not that the display suddenly turns black, starts before it does not answer the display in no operation no longer responds to pressure, then if I get close to the ear it becomes completely black.
apple support told me that a software problem.

Thanks for clarifying. This would be an issue with your Proximity Sensor. I'm going to assume your case (if you have a case on the phone) isn't interfering? If you have a case on, remove it and test the phone without a case. If that isn't the issue, the standard troubleshooting steps are:

Reboot

Reset

Restore

Try those first and if that doesn't resolve this for you, then its time to schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and they can test your phone.

I also have same issue. With each restart it fixes for around 15 times but then goes back to same. I have contacted Apple via Twitter but they have given no solution and seems they don’t have an answer. In my opinion this is a faulty phone does Apple have the policy to refund for this faulty phones?

I also have exprienced intermitent unresponsive black screens while making calls. Previous remark about the proximity sensor makes sense and the following article explains its use:

I use a BodyArmor case that may get dirty over the sensor. Not sure if proximity sensor uses the camera lens, the speaker or if it occupies one of the 3 camera sized ports surrounding the screen’s top camera ans speaker.

Next time I have this trouble I will pop the phone out of the case and see if that and maybe a quick wipe down clears my problem.

sorry but a hardware problem does not occur every 15 times but 10 times out of 15 approximately.
the underlying problem is that if you go to the genius bar you have to prove your problem and if you can not in case the device does not present what you are about to apple, they can not help you.
