Does Itunes need be running on a PC/MAC for Apple TV to have access to the media if i store it on a network storage device or media server like a synology NAS.

Can anyone provide a sample list of devices that work for them to store 3 to 4 Terabytes of Itunes media and comment on the ease of setup or lessons learned.

I currently use an old PC with an external drive, but the PC is dying and I need to replace. I am not tied to PC if the best solution requires a MAC.

For Playback through the Computers App on the Apple TV, yes, the computer needs to be on, and itunes running and accessing the library on the NAS for the Apple TV to be able to use it.

With that said, however, there are Apple TV Apps in the store that can let you access a NAS directly.

VLC for instance can directly connect to a NAS and play unprotected content from there.
