It's called on Apple's site a 'Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader', it's designed to only work with copying photos and videos to the Photos app

With the Lightning to SD Card Camera Reader, it’s easy to download photos and videos from your digital camera to your iPad or iPhone so you can view them on the gorgeous Retina display and share them with family and friends.

After you insert the SD card into the reader, your iPad or iPhone automatically opens the Photos app, which organizes your photos into Moments, Collections, and Years.

By and large the SD camera connection kit only works to import photos and videos onto the iPad. And these photos and videos must follow a specific naming convention to be seen by the iPad.

There are some devices out there that can import and export data. FOr example I have a lexar micro sd card reader that uses apps made by Lexar to import/export data. BUt it is a specific device and has to use an app to move the data around.

Using the apple SD card reader all you can do is import photos and videos. THere is zero support for exporting data off the ipad using that device.

If your camera takes photos using the common naming convention (for example IMG_3456.jpg....basically 8 characters), then the ipad will import the photos and videos. It should also upload them to your iCloud if you have that enabled...but be careful because iCloud is not a photo backup service, it’s a syncing service and if you delete an image off the SD card and iPad it will also be deleted off iCloud.

Take the iPad to the store where you bought the cable and have them show you how to transfer the files.

You might also tell us what device originated the files in question. While the Camera Connection Kit will only transfer photos there are other ways to transfer files from the originating device. These include AirDrop from Apple devices, Drop Box and iCloud.

You do also need to purchase the micro SD card to use in it. THe downside if you want to go back and forth between an iDevice and a computer you will also need another card reader for the card (take it out of the lexar, put it in the usb reader and vice versa)

I have one of these and it works on my iPad and iPod touch. Lexar has two free apps to use with this device.

there is also this

SanDisk iXpand 32 GB Flash Drive - USB 3.0/Apple Lightning

Which is an all in one. But I have never used it so can’t testify to how well it works.

For your camera you’re probably fine. If the ipad sees the photos then it uses the 8 character naming convention. Usually the bigger issue is if people are using their phones or the memory from their phones and the file name is a lot different so the ipad card reader won’t work.

Whaaat? Are you sure?

this is ridiculous... I only bought this in order to move data back and forth.. and if you’re right, then I ve been told loads of crap..(and I talked to a looot of people in diff stores..telling them what I need if for)

So, no way I could also free space from my camera so card to put them onto the iPad either?? If so, this thing is useless, i’m in deep s*** while traveling (and it’s overpriced on top, btw...)

Store is in paris; i’m In bombay now...

obviously, paris or bombay, **** cable only goes one way anyway..

The airdrop..mmyeah... wouldn’t work (never have had any use of it before), and 3 phone calls with apple support, 40mn each regarding this have left me with the pb unsolved.. At some point i had to pack my things and go..

Didn’t know that ipads were such ridiculously closed off unflexible useless toys..and, what can you do with 16gb seriously.. Not much.Apple really to stop taking people for milk cows..

thx anyway

Hi,

can you name the specific name of your device please? Is it still being sold? What’s the price range? Do uYou know about other alternatives to this one, that work well too? Would this one work with my ipad and ios version btw?

(i was actually originally looking for such a device, but how many times did i thought “ getting this one” to only notice in reviews it wouldn’ Work with this and that.., also most stores in paris or berlin simply do not have those.. the reason why i got the apple one in the end after hours of search.. - again: tons of sellers confirmed it could do both import and export”.. now i cant access my files..nor will i be able to transfer pics from small GB sd card to ipad and ipad to big GB sd card to save sapce and files.. as that was my plan..)

As to the image naming of the camera.. good question! All i can say it’s a canon eos 450d.. i guess it’s IMG.. but not sure - Maybe someone knows here..?

thx 🙂
