Hi,
The first thing to try, since it is so easy, is to open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys, and selecting to delete preferences in the box that appears. Sometimes that cures glitches.
If that doesn't work to cure it, try importing to your desktop using the Image Capture app on your Mac. Then drag the clip into an iMovie project timeline. If it won't go in, try opening it in Quicktime Player and saving to your desktop. You will get a .mov file. Try dragging that one into iMovie.
If still no luck, use the free download, Handbrake, to convert the clip to Mp4/AAC that Handbrake will do by default. Then try importing into iMovie.
