iPhone headphone jack adapter

My iPhone earbuds adapter works for a few minutes, and then it says that the accessory is not supported. If I unplug it and plug it back in, it works again until the same error stops it. I have tried cleaning, restarting, airplane mode, everything. Clearly, it IS compatible because it works until Apple steps in. I recently converted from an Android and have regretted every second of this iPhone. Androids don’t take advantage and rob people by forcing them to buy and rebuy a million different pieces for their phone. I never had a single issue with them. Tell me how to fix this immediately. Thank you.

There are a number of possibilities. The lightning port may have an issue. There may be a problem with the headphones. Or, there may be a problem with the adapter.


Is this the adapter that came with your iPhone? Do you have the option to test it with a different iPhone? Do the headphones work with other devices?

The headphones work great with anything else. This is not the adapter that came with my phone because those never worked correctly either. They were extremely fuzzy and crackling for the first half hour of being in the phone. I got a new adapter hoping to fix that issue, and it did, except the phone *suddenly* decides they are not compatible after awhile. I will have to find someone else with an iPhone to test it on theirs. This shouldn’t be an issue when it works perfectly for a time.

If you are using an aftermarket adapter, you need to ensure that it has been certified as MFi. That means that it is Made for iPhone. Those products carry a image on them stating they have met the standards from Apple. Since you are receiving a warning that the part is not compatible, it is very possible this part was not MFi and could be the cause of the issue. If you experienced a problem with your Apple adapter, it is warrantied just like the phone and you could have had it checked and replaced if necessary.


You may also wish to check the lightning port on your iPhone with a strong flashlight and magnifying glass to see if there is any dust, dirt, or lint accumulated that can cause connection issues. You can use a small, wooden toothpick to try to remove any of such debris. Do not use any sharp, metal instruments as it can cause serious issues with the phone.

I'm not sure why you think that something working intermittently means that there's no problem. Clearly, something isn't working properly. If it was, it would work all of the time.


If your phone is less than one year old, I making an appointment at the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. Take the phone and the adapter that came with it. The adapters work pretty well. If yours isn't working properly and it's under warranty, Apple will replace it.


What about the headphones that came with the phone? Do they work properly?

Yes, as I stated, clearly something is wrong when Apple is blocking the use of certain products, and I’m not sure why you’re commenting on that unecessarily as though I made a dumb statement. There was no reason for you to address that.


The headphones that came with the phone work fine but the are ungodly uncomfortable. I got new headphones for this reason, which work in the exact same way with my adapters as the Apple headphones.


I will just use my old Android to listen to anything, because they have normal headphone jacks (like most other phones) and make the move back to them and their customer service in the future. Thank you.

Your rude comment came before I had a chance to respond to your first response, which I actually found helpful and was going to thank you. I saw no reason for your comment and no prompt for it. I was about to thank you before you fired that off for no reason. I ask that you please stop responding now.

For what it’s worth you were doing fine until that uncalled for comment that had nothing to do with trouble shooting. I’m sorry that I had already tried all of your suggestions except on another phone. I was going to try that and I appreciated the suggestion.


And thank you to the other user who informed me of the Mifi. That is what I was referring to. I would prefer to not support a company with those values and this customer service, and I am entitled to know those things and feel that way.

We're going to have to disagree on that. Yes, it had everything to do with troubleshooting. You seem to believe that the problem is something that Apple has done to prevent you from using a third party accessory. If you persist in that belief, there's no point in trying to help you figure out what the problem actually is.

You have the ability to mark responses as helpful, or if they solve your question. This is a user to user support forum, and Apple does not participate here. No one here are Apple employees and this is not Apple's Customer Service. Everyone here are users, just like you, and provide answers and other troubleshooting information to others.


Apple's decision to warn users of accessories that are not MFi, is an effort to protect user devices from damage when it comes to accessories that do not meet the standards of Apple's accessories. These include the adapter that you have purchased, accessories like lightning cables that can cause problems with batteries. I hope this helps you understand why you experienced this, and how to troubleshoot your Apple accessories. Apple provides warranty and support for their devices and accessories, and you very well may get your adapter replaced. Also, there are other headphone manufacturers that produce lightning connection headphones, and many other devices are turning to these types of headphones, which are digital as opposed to analog styles which we are used to connecting with a jack. I would say enjoy your iPhone as much as I do, but it seems you would rather change. Good luck with that decision as well.
