Apple support scams

I keep getting calls from persons with heavy Indian accents saying they are from Apple support and have monitored a problem with my computer. They have me log to a website and ask me to share access to my computer. In Dec 2017 they did work to remove "malware", installed software, and had me buy a $500 Apple gift card to pay for it. I had the feeling I had just been scammed.

Yesterday they called me again. I discussed my concerns with them and they told me refund was underway. Midway through the conversation the line went dead. They called again today to tell me they had investigated my computer and the problem was in my network firewall. They asked me to but $500 if iTunes gift cards to pay for the protection they wanted to install. I told them I would call back when ready.

Is there any way to know if these people are legit? If they're not, how can I make them stop or better yet, have them arrested?

Hi Iowa Fossil,

Sorry to hear your story, these fraudulent companies are making millions by catching people unaware of their methods.

If you have the time, there are lots of YouTube videos...

Once you have responded, and given the some sort of payment, they will happily sell your details to other scammers.

If your phone, or phone service allows it, block the (likely bogus, spoofed) number that they used. Get scam caller protection from your supplier to screen all incoming calls to reduce the likelihood of them ever getting through again.

You say that you left them have access to your computer. They could have done all sort of "bad" things to your computer.

Do you have a backup of your machine from before you let them have access to your machine? You should restore your machine from a back from before you let them have access to the machine.

No...

You should copy your data to another drive. Do not copy apps. They may have been hacked.

do an internet recovery.

option + command + r should work. power off. hold down option + command + r key. power on. wait to see icon.

erase the drive. [ others: how do we erase the hidden partitions and restore them? ]

Reinstall macos.
