If you are in a different country you will not be able to buy AppleCare for that phone nor will you be able to get warranty service for it. You will have to send it back to your aunt and have her take it in for service if it should need it as there is no international warranty on an iPhone.
Let's hope you never need to use it.
Authorized Apple sellers get their Apple products wholesale. Their sales are no different than those from Apple. The Apple default one year warranty starts on the date of sale from Apple or any Apple Authoirzed seller.
A seller who is not Apple Authorized is selling used devices, plain and simply, and the warranty on their items starts when they were first sold at retail by Apple or an Authorized seller. Buying from an non-Authorized Seller is little different than buying a used iPhone from anyone.
That‘s the whole point of why Apple makes their global list of Authoirzed sellers available online - https://locate.apple.com/. They provide an Authoirzed seller program so you can know that what you’re buying is a genuinely retail-new Apple device.
P.S. It’s also similar for other prodcts. Warranties generally don’t start on the date of legitimate wholesale purchase. They start on the date of original retail sale if sold by someone or some place that purchased them legitimately at wholesale or through a legitimate or authoirized distributor.
Perhaps not. If they were products you, yourself, bought, you may well have started using them immediately. The Japanese connection and delay changes all that.
But Apple are not unsympathetic; it's worth contacting them. Let us know how you got on.

Their inventory control reports each purchase to Apple and the warranty begins on the date of sale. There are people who bought gray market Apple products and found that their effective warranty date was the date that the original retail purchase was made. However, Apple will still honor the warranty. Some companies will only honor a warranty if owned by the original purchaser.
The warranty starts on the date of purchase, not the date of activation.

Again, kind of weasely, but quite a few warranty terms say that only the original retail purchaser can seek repair or replacement under warranty. Apple's terms are generous in that they only start with the original purchase but they don't bar anyone else from seeking warranty repair. There's a lot of terms out there, but here's an US LG phone warranty (on page 173) as an example:
1. WHAT THIS WARRANTY COVERS:
LG offers you a limited warranty that the enclosed subscriber unit and its
enclosed accessories will be free from defects in material and workmanship,
according to the following terms and conditions:
(1) The limited warranty for the product extends for TWELVE (12) MONTHS
beginning on the date of purchase of the product with valid proof of purchase,
or absent valid proof of purchase, FIFTEEN (15) MONTHS from date of
manufacture as determined by the unit's manufacture date code.
(2) The limited warranty extends only to the original purchaser of the product
and is not assignable or transferable to any subsequent purchaser/end user.
The Federal Trade Commission even says one might need proof of being the original owner. Having the original receipt may be enough though for most warrantors.

Apple has been consistent for decades. All of their product warranties start on the date of original retail sale. And that’s not just Apple, that applies to almost every single consumer product sold. A seller has no control over when someone starts using a product, but the minute it leaves their inventory they have no control over it’s use or care, so they will not accept responsibility if something sits in a box for weeks, or months, or years before actually taken out and used.
That‘s always something to consider when buying gifts for people well ahead of giving it them, warranties almost always start counting down from the date of purchase. That goes for tablets, laptops, cell phones, TVs, speakers, headphones, storage devices, monitors, keyboards, cases, etc. Your warranty start date is the date on your sales receipt.
My old iPhone was also from Japan and I took it to the official reseller and they replace it with new one because of software error.
