Applecare coverage

AppleCare replaced my iPad during the first two years of purchase. That was awesome. I was told that the two year coverage started over from the date of replacement. I brought my iPad in today for a different hardware failure and was told the coverage only applies to the purchase date. Was I misinformed? Understandable policy but frustrating to learn after the fact.
