How can I add custom labels to phone contacts?
iPhone 6 Plus
Go to the contact, click on Edit, then click on the items in blue and select Custom Label.

If you have an Exchange account, you may not be able to do what you want. It depends on how the administrator has configured things.

I went to the contact, clicked on Edit, then click on the items in blue. That only dialed the contact's number. There was not an option to create custom labels. I use to create custom labels on pervious iPhones. One additional note. If your default Contact account is an Exchange account, you may not be able to create custom labels.

It sounds as if you're tapping on the number itself, not the label.
