Does cellular iPad mini 1 has gps?

I’m so frustrated. I bought an iPad 1 to use in my car for an offline gps.. didn’t detect gps signal. I figured it’s too old. I then bought an iPad mini 1.. didn’t detect signal either!

Then I read WiFi only models don’t have gps. Who would’ve known considering in your house with WiFi it finds your location easily! Anyway I’m going to try one more time. Can you guys guarantee me that an iPad mini 1 cellular edition will work with offline GPS with or without a SIM card?

Tech specs for all Apple products are readily available here - Apple - Support - Technical Specifications

Wifi only iPads have never had GPS - they do have location services using other location based data (WiFi node approx. location, BT microbeacons).

But only WiFi+cellular iPads have an actual GPS receiver in them. And all WiFi+cellular iPads have GPS.

I use the Wifi based passive gps on my Wifi iPads all the time.

As long as you program the route and start the route while in range of a WiFi signal, the passive gps in Wifi iPads works pretty well as long as the iPad can detect Wifi signals along the route.

My Wife and I have used this quite a bit on long trips in one of our vehicles that doesn’t have an onboard gps system.

We haven’t gotten lost yet in the last 4-5 years of using Wifi iPads for gps navigation.

Worked very well for our trips around New England, New York, PA. and to Delaware.

The WiFi based location works pretty well. I've used it on an iPad Mini 2 on a train to figure out where I was, and even overseas. You have to have WiFi on though.

That won't be very helpful to the OP who wants to use the device in their car.

Depends on where you are. It can work reasonably well in a metro area with lots of WiFi. Aren't there also gyros to help fill in the gaps? I've had my iPad while someone else was driving and it was remarkably accurate.
