CD audio book doesn't automatically show in audio book folder

I have CD set of an audio book. The CDs naturally go into the music folder of my iPod Nano. When I import the set of CDs into iTunes, I always have to manually change the media type to audio book from music. What's worse, I have to do each track individually. I've tried selecting all the tracks of an album, selecting Get Info, clicking on Options, and trying to change the media type to audio book, but it only has Music as the only option in the drop down.

Two questions:

1. Why can't I change the media type to audio book for multiple tracks at the same time?

2. Why does iPod not recognize audio books CDs as audio books?

Great, here's a brief AppleScript that should help out with changing the media kind. Copy everything between the two lines into the Script Editor and save it as SetToAudiobook.scpt. Select tracks in iTunes and run the script to change the media kind in a flash.

tell application "iTunes"

if selection is not {} then

set sel to selection

repeat with aTrack in sel

set media kind of aTrack to audiobook

end repeat

end if

end tell

Is there a particular reason for wanting to have these files as audiobooks? If so, perhaps there is something else you can do that will achieve the effect you want and that might be quicker and perhaps even automated.

For example, to stop the "audiobook files" playing (at random) when shuffling music, simply set the audiobooks to Skip when shuffling. I've just tried it on my iTunes purchases and this does work for multiple files.

Other organisational options include grouping the audiobooks together (there are various automated methods for achieving this) and then having them in an "audiobook" Playlist. A Smart Playlist can then add everything except the audiobooks (even though they are still Media Kind of music.) This would have the effect of preventing "audiobooks" from being added to Playlists when you don't want them to be there.

You can provide feedback here: Feedback - iTunes - Apple but be aware that you will not hear back from them. Apple do not respond to the feedback we provide.

In the drop-down box headed I have feedback about:, may I suggest that you choose either;

  • An enhancement request
  • Feature improvement
  • Design/Ease of use

in preference to "broken feature". If you suggest to Apple that it is broken, they will check it and say but it's working the way we designed it, so it's not broken (end of story).

  1. As stated, you can make these files Skip when shuffling (in the track options), which would prevent them from playing when music is in shuffle mode. As far as I know, the nano would not play songs set to Skip when Shuffling songs in any list chosen
  2. Put the "audiobook" tracks from a book into a Regular Playlist (one for each book, and in chapter order) and put all the book Regular Playlists into one Playlist Folder, named (for example) Audiobooks

Note that I've named the Playlist Folder in all capitals (so I can easily identify it as a folder on an iPod nano. ). Also, a Smart Playlist could be created for a book, with the rule "Title is <album title>" (where the album title is the name of the book). This would cause all tracks for the book to automatically be added to the Playlist.

It's just an idea...

Although I mainly talk about using multi-track audiobooks in that article the tools for making single track versions I've linked to shouldn't rely on the media kind in iTunes.

Do you have either Apple Music or iTunes Match. At first I was going to say I don't have problems changing media kind. I can happily change audiobooks to music and back again. Then I tried with a regular album that was already in music collection and got different results, which surprised me. Are you Windows or Mac? It might be possible to change the media kind with an AppleScript if you have a Mac.

Thank you for your help. I understand your answer on my second question, so that takes care of that.

On my first question, I am using iTunes version 12.7.3.46. I've checked to make sure there aren't any updates. I tried selecting multiple songs like you illustrated but I still only get Music as the only option in the drop down menu under Options of Get Info.

Okay, that is the latest version of iTunes (on today's date, that is) and the same version I'm using.

So far, the only songs I've found in my Library that have only Music as an option when selectingh them as a group are the ones I've purchased from the iTunes Store, including the U2 album they insisted on giving me. I've checked some (but not all) of the music I've purchased from Amazon, but even when selecting multiple songs, I still retain the option to change tracks to audiobooks.

At the moment therefore, I don't know what causes that. I cannot find the filed that causes that restriction.

I want the media kind of the files as "Audiobooks" because when I am importing an audiobook CD to iTunes Library, I want the iPod to recognize the imported files as an audiobook instead of music. Currently, I have to change each individual file's media kind to "Audiobook" so that: 1. the audiobook files don't get played with the music files, and 2. I can filter the audiobook for playback.
