Can’t boot into safe mode

My computer is a mid-2012 MacBook Pro and won’t reboot into safe mode. The slide bar with apple logo sticks about 3/4 the way through, the screen dims slightly and it hangs there. End of story.

MacBook Pro, iOS 11.2.5, SSD drive added later
