Profile Manager - log in items and dock problems

I've recently started using Profile Manager on a small network of 12 macs (10.12.6 & 10.13.3) and Mac OS Server 10.11.6.

I'm running network user accounts using Open Directory, with network home folders.

I have 2 problems:

1. I've added a shared volume (on a Synology NAS) to Login Items in the Profile Manager (all devices). I'm using afp://server/mount in the Authenticated Network Mounts section. For some users, the volume logs automatically as soon as they log in. Others get a password request dialog which does not include a 'Remember password in keychain' box. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to who gets this dialog and who does not. Connecting using 'Connect to server' will usually work fine without prompting for a password. I've tried deleting the passwords from the keychain and even resetting the keychain altogether but it makes no difference.

2. I've added the shared volumes to the dock but all I get is a question mark. Even when a user logs in and the volume mounts without a prompt, I still have a ? which does nothing when clicked. If I kill the dock process, forcing it to relaunch, then it appears with the volume intact. So I surmise that the dock is loading before the volume is mounting.

Can anyone help with these issues, please?

Thanks

James

Hi!

Login Items from Profile Manager are not working in High Sierra Clients (10.13.3) at the moment (Please correct me if someone has them working). I was in touch with Apple Enterprise Support and they replied in Nov2017:

"This behavior has been reported to Apple and is currently being investigated. " ... "Unfortunately, we don't have an ETA at this time, but engineering is actively investigating this behavior and I will follow up as soon as any new information becomes available."

10.12 is working fine.

Cheers!

Thanks for your reply - though my problem is different to this one. I've noticed that log in items don't work properly on 10.13, but my issue spans most other iterations of the OS.

It's not limited to mounting volumes at log in, either. If I try to mount a volume manually, sometimes it will remember the password, sometimes it will ask for a password with a 'remember' check box and sometimes it will ask for a password without the option to remember it.

Sometimes, when the 'remember' box is checked, an entry will be created in the key chain but with the user name and password left blank. Sometimes, if I manually add the user name and password to the key chain entry, the volume will then mount without asking for user/password. But subsequently it will ask again for log in details even though they are stored in the keychain.

This happens on every client on our network - but only when network accounts with network home folders are being used.

Anyone got any other ideas?

Thanks

Have you tried using SMB rather than afp?

Having said that I am still having problems - any locally stored or mounted item on the mac does work when included in a profile, but other networked volumes don't. Yet they always did prior to High Sierra. I have had to add them manually to each mac - then of course the users can delete them. I am testing for the next academic year - at the moment I will not be upgrading to High Sierra on all macs.
