java control panel update now button

On two of 30 machines where I am trying to update java the Java Control Panel comes up, tells me I have an update available, but the "Update Now" button doesn't do anything. When I click on it, the button cover highlights (turns blue) and when I let up on the click the button goes to having a blue border. But it doesn't launch the updater like it does on every other machine, just flashes the button. When I watch the system.log while I launch the control panel, I see the following error appear on only the affected machines:

Feb 9 11:56:20 {hostname} java[27242]: objc[27242]: Class JavaLaunchHelper is implemented in both /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/bin/java and /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/lib/jli/./libjli.dylib. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined.

but it also appears on other machines which have updated just fine.

I found some discussion of this error on stack overflow, but never in the context of it blocking the java update. Does anybody know how to get java to update when the button doesn't work?

The easiest way is to just download and install a fresh copy from java.com:

Download Free Java Software
