How can I turn off Volume Control pop-up in iOS 11?

We have developed an application that allows people to test their hearing. So we need to be able to control the volume of iPads.

The problem is, with the latest iOS, every time the code runs that (if required) adjusts the iPad volume, the volume icon/control pops up - right in the middle of the screen. It appears even when there has been NO CHANGE to the volume level. It is EXTREMELY annoying and confusing to users.

How can this pop-up be disabled? We are not the only group who are affected by this change within iOS. Here are some threads:
