That's right. Run the BBC iPlayer Radio app, choose the station and start to play it, and then from the swipe up/down menu (depending on your device), choose your HomePod from the list of AirPlay outputs.

I've had the HomePod set up for an hour, and this is something that I need - it is frustrating not having Siri able to play BBC Radio 4 for me without having to use another app.

You will have to Play BBC Radio on your Apple Device then AirPlay it to HomePod. Quite easy.

AppleTV is even worse for BBC Radio 4. Its as if they think that only BBC Radio 1 listeners use AppleTV. Wish BBC iPlayer Radio was available on AppleTV. The AppleTV BBC iPlayer app only has Radio 1 in its channel list! Please Apple and BBC if you are listening, bring Radio 4 and 3 etc to AppleTV app, as it unecessarily runs down the iPhone battery to Airplay from iPhone BBC iPlayer Radio app. I bought a Google Chromecast to be able to get Radio 4 on tv without draining iPhone (Chromecast hands over to content providers servers and releases the streaming burden from the iPhone and its battery). Apologies for highjacking this thread.

It might be easy, but it is not straightforward. And if one has accessibility issues, it is really inconvenient- Apple TV has BBC Iplayer integrated, even though it is ‘easy’ to stream via iplayer. I agree this is an important feature to have

So I can't just have HomePod play it natively, I must run the radio station thru another device first?

I agree with you, having to access via another device might be easy, but is certainly not convenient- this is a SIGNIFICANT disadvantage in my opinion
