High Sierra, iMovie and MTS Files

Hi All,

I upgraded my 2012 iMac to High Sierra, only to find that this is totally preventing me from working with my home movies. I have two related problems: I'm not getting any audio transferred across in iMovie 10.1.8 in the following situations:

1. Importing *MTS files from a Panasonic HDC-SD90 camcorder.

2. Importing old footage from mini-DV tapes (a Canon camcorder).

Both of these operations worked fine in Sierra. The native files play through their respective camcorders and have no audio issues at all. The MTS files can no longer be viewed in Preview, and I'm unable to open in Quicktime.

Thanks very much for any suggestions and ideas, and hopefully Apple will fix their broken iMovie!

Many other have reported audio issues with MTS files with High Sierra. Your camera has an iFrame option, I believe, so you might try recording in that and see if it makes any difference.

You can also try importing the MTS files directly to your desktop with the Image Capture app on your Mac, and from there converting the MTS files to Mp4/AAC with the free download, Handbrake. That has worked for other users.

As pointed out by Terrence Devlin on this forum, the problem with AVCHD is that there is no standard for it. Every manufacture has its own variant, that sometimes is different even within camera models.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the fast response, but unfortunately I'm talking about existing footage rather than the plan for new footage. The Image Capture suggestion is long and cumbersome when I'm simply trying to transfer video footage to my mac, as there are hundreds of clips to import. The AVCHD format may not have a standard, but both of these camcorders produced footage that was transferrable using Sierra - that implies that Apple has somehow broken their iMovie with the latest update. Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can get the iMovie import function to work properly again, as it did only a short time ago?

Many thanks!
