Time machine "verify backups" is gray after holding Option key

iMac 27" using mac OS High Sierra v.10.13.3. Having trouble verifying backup with Time Machine with Seagate Backup Plus Drive for Mac. I've tried to hold down Option key after clicking on Time Machine icon in top menu. Verify Backups is grayed out. How can I verify backups?

Verify Backups will only work on "network" drives, like a Time Capsule or other NAS that are connected to the network router using an Ethernet connection.


Your Seagate drive is likely connected to your Mac using a USB connection, which makes it a "local" drive.


If that might be the case, you will need to use Disk Utility on your Mac to check the drive

Open Disk Utility (Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)

Click on the Seagate drive to highlight it

Click First Aid and let the process run
