Hello,

Computer freezes and restarts. Kernel Panic reports:

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

(Bellow is the full report).

Related to bluetooth?

Is this a bug or... ?

Thanks

Sorry, I did not notice you have a MacPro 5,1. Memory problems simply DO NOT fester on these Xeon powered Macs, because the computer has error-correcting memory:

User Tip: Mac Pro and Error Correcting Code RAM Memory

The bluetooth driver was present at the scene of the crime, but it is not likely to be the cause. The error message states that during self-checking, the memory allocation process looked at its data structures and found they were damaged.

This is most likely caused by corrupted software, or by an errant high-speed peripheral. Processor-based (one-character-at-a-time) Input and Output work OK for slow devices like keyboards, but faster devices use Direct Memory Access hardware to place their incoming data directly into memory. If they slip and place it in the wrong place, they can easily clobber data and instructions.

A Re-Install in-place will assure you that your macOS is good. This process does not bulk-erase anything outside of System Directories. (Your files and your settings are left untouched.)

A re-Install re-writes over 350,000 files. If your drive is getting old, this much re-writing could push it over the edge into failure. You should have a Trusted Backup before proceeding.

In my opinion, based on what you reported, you need to run diagnostics on your peripheral devices, or replace them. As a test, you could run without and see if the problem recurs.

Hello Grant,

An update on this.

I’ve done the following :

Tested the memory and board with Apple hardware diagnostics. No error found

Removed the SSD pcie drive, installed an WD 3,5” drive.

Removed the graphics card installed the graphics card that came with the Mac pro.

Did fresh installation of OS X high sierra on the new drive.

Installed protools, the metric halo FireWire interfaces, and a usb license dongle required to run protools and other software, and a usb controller (Softube Console 1).

Did all the above to rule out as much as possible. However, I got a kernel panic while running protools a few hours after using it. Report was similar to previous reports.

It’s pretty clear that it’s one of these peripherals that does the damage.

I will continue with tests and report here.

Thanks

Alex

Hello Grant,

Many thanks for your reply. It was the most informative so far.

The truth is I have been having this issue for years. Formatting and reinstalling OS did not help.

Also, this computer is used for a music studio and its a nightmare situation to have kernel panics like that (the other day I had a kernel panic while recording drums, lost the takes, felt embarrassed to the band).

So that particular kernel panic was the only one so far that DID include a specific an extension so that I could at least see where the problem occurs. It occurred on bluetooth driver, correct? I have removed the apple Mighty Mouse and using the wired one instead.

So you rule out the possibility that this was indeed a bluetooth problem?

About CUDA, this MacPro does not use the standard graphics card. I have upgraded to an nVidia GeForce GTX760, because the previous card was making too much noise (you don't want noise on music studios).

As for memory, its there's problem with any memory units, shouldn't a memory test reveal it ?

The only peripheral that I could think could cause problems are the Metric Halo ULN8 (two of them). These units are firewire at their current state (they company plans to upgrade to ethernet and usb-2). The truth is that I have been having problems with the units (their software application which manages the units sometimes crashes) but I have send them the panic reports and they claim that the panics are not related to their drivers.

I'm as close as solving this as I have never been. This issue drives me nuts.

Could this be power related?

Or maybe my PCIE SSD drive I'm using (using it also to boot OSX) ?

Thanks a lot,

Alex

Hello Grant,

I had another panic. Was using wired mouse. So you're right, bluetooth was not directly responsible for the previous panic.

Here's today's panic. Also, bellow that is EtreCheck report.

The only peripheral that could indeed cause problem is the Metric Halo units. Those are the firewire interfaces.

Also there's an USB license device on the computer (iLok).

here is a distillation of that report:

panic[...]: "a freed zone element has been modified in zone kalloc.16

[...]

Kernel Extensions in backtrace:

com.apple.iokit.IOBluetoothFamily(5.0.5f1)

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOReportFamily(31)

[...]

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task

kalloc is the Memory allocator. Those routines have so many miles on them, and have been so throughly tested, that finding a new bug in them is extremely unlikely.

Your report does not contain third-part kernel extensions other than CUDA, which is also likely to be nearly bug-free. that leaves two possibilities:

One is that a peripheral device is spraying stuff around in memory (in which case you would have noticed that peripheral was not working properly), or some software on your Mac is damaged and clobbering memory.

The other is that memory itself is damaged. this usually manifests itself as bits in a word that do not stay as they are supposed to, and cause random changes that make things go haywire.

So your mission is to look at the next or previous reports and decide: are the panic-reason, extensions present at the screen of the crime, and BSD process the same, or different.

The same is a Trend. it will point to a particular bunch of software. The fix for that is likely a re-install in place.

"all over the map" is a Non-Trend, and it indicates a RAM memory problem. The reason a memory problem causes random, rather that deterministic failures is that MacOS deliberately randomizes the load point of certain key routines, as a hedge against attacks at fixed addresses.
