"iTunes cannot read the contents of iPhone"

Hello!

I just got my new iPhone 8 Plus last Monday. It is running the latest iOS 11.2.5. When I connect it to my MacBook, I get an error saying in order to read the contents of my phone, I must restore. I have also tried it on another Mac and another Windows PC. I attached a few screenshots below.

I am running macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 and iTunes 12.7.3.46, and am still seeing this error.

Why am I getting this error? Is there a way to resolve this without completely backing up and restoring my iPhone?

Thank you for your help!

OK, so to paraphrase your scenario:

  • You received your iPhone 8 Plus from Apple
  • You placed your iPhone into Recovery Mode to update iOS from 11.0.3 to 11.2.5.
  • Your iPhone was set up as new
  • Five days have elapsed, and you plugged your iPhone into iTunes again
  • You're being asked to restore to factory settings, which you seem reluctant to do

So I would say you have two choices:

  1. Take the iPhone to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center. Let them assess what's going on and advise you.
  2. Do the restore. This may or may not solve the issue - if it does not, you would have to take the iPhone to an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Service Center anyway as it may have a hardware issue.

First, thank you for posting version numbers of iTunes and iOS. That will save time, because we needed to know this information.

When you received your iPhone, exactly how did you set it up? Some examples of things we need to understand:

  • Has this iPhone ever been in contact with iTunes before?
  • Was it restored from a backup of a previous iPhone?
  • Was it set up as brand new?
  • Did you receive the iPhone in a factory sealed box from an Apple Store or Authorized Apple Retailer?
  • How did it receive iOS 11.2.5? Was this version pre-installed when you opened the factory-sealed box?

hello!

I recieved my iPhone 8 Plus delivered from Apple.com. It was sealed and brand new. It came with iOS 11.0.3 originally, and it was still coming up with the error from iTunes when i connected it to my Mac. I had to put my phone in recovery mode in order to update through iTunes. After updating, i was still getting the error.

I setup my iphone as a new one, without restoring from a backup.

Thanks for your help!
