How can I get the map to show up after I complete a outdoor walk or run workout?

This is an unanswered question from October.

I too would like to know how to do this.

There seem to be many choices in the activities section, but which ones will show a map and why?

and

What do the dots and dashed mean?

Thanks

Barry

Hi

The built-in Workout app can use the built-in GPS on Apple Watch Series 2 and 3 models - or, for other models, on your paired iPhone, if taken along - to record a route map for Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, Outdoor Cycle and Open Water Swim workouts that are recorded via the app.

The route map can be viewed on your iPhone in the companion Activity app after your workout, once your workout results have synced (which takes place automatically when your Apple Watch and iPhone are connected):

On your iPhone, in the Activity app, go to: Workouts (tab) > tap on a workout > a thumbnail map image is shown under the heading "Route" > tap on it to view a larger image of your route map.

Gaps in the route line indicate a lack of GPS reception. The colours on the route map indicate your pace, with green being the fastest and red being the slowest pace.

More information and instructions for using the Workout app are detailed here:

If a route map is not recorded as expected, then the following steps may help:

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest compatible software versions, starting with your iPhone:

Check that Wrist Detection is turned on and that, if passcode is enabled, you are unlocking your Apple Watch after placing it on your wrist:

  • On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Passcode.
  • Turn on each of Wrist Detection, Passcode and Unlock with iPhone.

Check that you are wearing your Apple Watch sufficiently snugly on the top of your wrist (if it is worn too loosely, your watch may believe that it has been removed):

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness - check that both Fitness Tracking and Health are enabled.

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch > Privacy - check that both Fitness Tracking and Heart Rate are enabled.

On your iPhone, go to: Settings > Privacy > Location Services:

  • Check that Location Services (the main setting at the top) is turned on.
  • In the list of apps beneath, if the option is shown (depending on your model), then check that Apple Watch Workout is set to While Using.
  • Also enable options under System Services including Motion Calibration & Distance, Wi-Fi Networking and Mobile Network Search.

Close certain apps and restart (normally) both your iPhone and your Apple Watch:

If the issue persists, next unpair and re-pair your Apple Watch:

If the issue then persists, I suggest that you contact Apple Support (mail-in service may be available, if required), make a Genius Bar reservation or visit an Apple Authorised Service Provider with a view to having your watch checked and, if recommended, serviced (whether under warranty, if eligible, or via chargeable repair service):

You're welcome! 🙂

As referenced in my previous reply, it is only possible, via the Workout app, to record route maps for Outdoor Walk, Outdoor Run, Outdoor Cycle and Open Water Swim workouts. Routes are not recorded for other workout types.

It is not possible to export your route maps to your Mac. Apple does not offer a companion Activity or Health app for computers or an online dashboard for Activity, Health or Workout data.

If you would like to submit a feature request to Apple, then you can do so here:

Wow certainly a lot to check!

Thanks for this.

My issue was that some activities produced a map and others did not. I assumed that those activities that did not produce the map produced were indoor activities, but expected at least the map around my location.

I did an outdoor "ride" and produced a map of my route, so all good there.

One last question.

Can the route be uploaded to my Mac?

Thanks again. I'll save this as a reference.
