Messages won’t open on Mac

I’ve updated my Mac to the latest version and ever since I haven’t been able to open the messages app. It always says Messages quit unexpectedly. I looked through a thread that said was able to solve the problem because their antivirus Afee or whatever was blocking it but I do not use that antivirus so I have no idea how to resolve this. Please help

Mac Pro, iOS 11.2.5

Hi,

Lets check you are in the right Library.

It is in Hard drive name/Users/Your Account (or the Little House icon)/Library

Now normally this is hidden.

So if you open the Users Folder and then open the Little House icon you see Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Movies, Pictures, Public and Sites.

At this point go to the View Menu and Show View Options.

In the last section there is tick boxes for Use Relative Dates, Calculate all Sizes, Show Icon Preview and Show Library.

Tick the box to Show Library.

It should now show in the Folder for the Little House icon (Your User's Folder).

If you open then you should be able to Navigate to Preferences.

Depending how far back your User's Account goes to there should be:-

com.apple.iChat.plist

com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist

com.apple.iChat.Jabber.plist

com.apple.iChat.Subnet.plist

com.apple.iChat.StatusMessages.plist

com.apple.ichat.TranscriptRenderingService.plist

com.apple.iChat.Yahoo.plist

com.apple.iChatAgent.plist

In High Sierra there is no AIM service, there has not been Yahoo for a while. High Sierra also drop Bonjour (The Subnet one).

The Jabber one is used by Google if you enter Google/hangouts info.

To effectively reset Messages it is the com.apple.ichat.plist one that needs deleting.

Hi,

Open a Finder window.

Use Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key at the same time.

This add the Library to the Menu list.

Select it.

Navigate to Preferences.

Find com.apple.iChat.plist

Drag this to the Trash Restart Messages.

If this does not help then start up Font Book.

Check you have and have them Activated:- Helvetica Neue, Lucida Grande and Emojies (Apple Color Emojies are near the bottom of the list).

Humm,

I would try the iChatAgent one next as this one tend to handle the Logins.

If that does not work then try a NVRAM reset
