Haven't gotten my HomePod yet but was wondering, does it work with Handoff? i.e. I tell Siri via the HomePod to play a song. Would the music controls then appear on the iPhone's lock screen upon wake from sleep, or at least show the Music icon in the lower left for Handoff?
Unfortunately, no -- worse yet, the music control does not appear on the Apple Watch either. The current HomePod is somewhat crude in its functions; hopefully future software updates will address these shortcomings.
See the Control audio section of Use and customize Control Center on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support. The HomePod can appear there just like the Apple TV does in that example.

Been there, done that: Remote control for HomePod, not using AirPlay. 😉
It is really nice for subtle volume control without disturbing what you're listening to, and for browsing what you might want to listen to next.
