"The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read..."

I just got a new Macbook pro with iTunes 12.6.2. I restored my data, including iTunes library from a cloud back up (Crashplan). I used the instructions here How to move your iTunes library to a new computer - Apple Support to move my iTunes library to my new Music folder. I did all that and when I opened iTunes got the dreaded error message "The file iTunes Library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes..." There was and option to quit and one to download iTunes. Downloading iTunes, which I already have, didn't seem right so I quit. I can't get past that error message to open iTunes. The answers I found for how to solve this were old so I'm asking the question again. Is there a way to do this without downgrading iTunes and/or losing data? Thanks so much!
