Running macOS Sierra 10.12.6. Doing some training with teachers on 13" MacBook airs. Went to show them how to airdrop and asked them to open up their finder. In the sidebar, several of them did not have AirDrop showing. Is there something I need to enable?

Open finder and its preferences click on sidebar make sure the box for air drop is checked .And click on show if air drop folder is hidden .
It will show in finder side bar .

Does Finder's menu include Go > AirDrop? If not, this Mac is too old to use AirDrop. If so, be certain you've enabled it by turning on Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi (see details in the article).
Try going to, in the menu bar, Finder<Preferences<Sidebar and checking off AirDrop.
