802.1X does not automatically connect when mac is connected via Ethernet cable

Running macOS High Sierra 10.13.3 (17D47) on MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015).

When connecting to my company network via an Apple Thunderbolt Ethernet convertor and Ethernet cable, I manually have to go to System Preferences < Network and click on "Connect" button to be able to surf the web.

I would like to automatically connect to 802.1X whenever I have an active Ethernet connection.

Checking "Enable automatic connection" under Advanced < 802.1X settings doe snot help: I still need to manually click on "Connect" every time I disconnect and reconnect the Ethernet cable.

Hi Bob,

That message in the window in the second screenshot explains that in order to add a new 802.1X profile to my system, I need to use a configuration profile. If I don't know where to get a configuration profile, I should contact my system administrator.

All of that is irrelevant for me, as I already have a working 802.1X profile: it is listed in the second screenshot and has the name "Network".

My problem is not that I cannot get the 802.1X profile to work. It works flawlessly.

My problem is that I have to manually connect to the 802.1X profile every time I unplug and plug in the Ethernet cable. I would like to connect automatically to this 802.1X profile.

That checkbox seems like it would result in automatic connection to the 802.1X profile when I plug in the Ethernet cable, but it does not happen for me.

I have the same issue and your answer does not address the question. It seems to be an issue with the autoconnect function on the mac, nothing to do with the actual connection or profile. Essentially for both the OP and I, clicking the "enable automatic connection" on the 802.1x screen makes no difference. Every time we plug our ethernet cable in we have to open network preferences, select our 802.1x profile, then click connect. Pretty annoying. On others' computers, clicking that auto connect enable checkbox makes it so that when they plug in it automatically connects to 802.1x, they don't need to click anything to get connection.
