Exporting to USB drive

I have a 4K file thats about 45 minutes and now a ProRes 422 @ 145GB. I was told not to export to a USB drive bigger then 4GB. I believe they were talking file size not USB size. whats the proper way to compress it. If I go to Share/setting/Format”Computer”/H264/1920x780 I get a Quicktime at 3.75GB. Is that the correct way? If I use Format”Computer” will they still be able to plug and play the USB into a TV?

The 4GB refers to the limitations of the traditional FAT32 format largely used by windows machines.

Most thumb drives come formatted that way and so cannot have files larger than 4GB. You could reformat such a drive using ExFAT, supported in mac and windows, but that may not be supported in some TV.

In general choosing Computer gives you the most compatible files -they come in H264 in an .mp4 file that should be playable in mac, pc, mobile phones and tv. If that comes at 3.75 GB then all is fine.

Note: well, if you use the Finder to copy such a file it may tell you it is too big; there is a silly bug in the Finder in High Sierra that “thinks” the limit is 2GB instead of 4GB. There are easy workarounds, though, if it comes to that.
