My wife and I have two separate apple ID's and Icloud photo accounts. Is there a easy way to combine them into one account? I understand there is a family share but I believe that would require me to merge the photo's manually into one account

You can't merge info from two separate Apple/iCloud Id's to one.
You would need to utilize family share and Photo sharing, to share the photos amongst the iCloud accounts.
Also, you can share/upload more than one photo at a time.
