CarPlay disconnecting

Hello, Bought a new 2018 BMW 430i and have been having issues from the start with CarPlay using my iPhone X. Continuously disconnects and then reconnects. Usually after about 10 minutes of driving. Has anyone else had this issues and found any resolutions. I’ve been in contact with BMW and they are saying numerous people have been reporting it and it’s an Apple software issue.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5

Yesterday I went to the local Apple store. They erased and re-installed the IOS on my IPhone X. Since then, car play is working great. If it fails again, they say the issue will most likely be hardware at which time the phone will need to be replaced.

That’s not the behavior I expected. Are you not driving a BMW?

I think you’re not, you would have gotten at least two prompts from the cars system with that procedure.

Hi all --

I think it is worth pointing out that, at least for my 2019 Mini Countryman, there is no option of using CarPlay with a wire -- it only works over wireless (Bluetooth). The Mini NAV is mostly the BMW system with a Mini-centric skin on it, so I assume that others in this family of vehicles are in a similar position as myself. I can indeed connect my phone to the car with a wire but it works like a USB connection in a car with a non CarPlay head unit (think Ford Sync) to play music and perform some other functions similar to a standard non-CarPlay Bluetooth Connection. To be clear, the CarPlay specific features are not available in my car with a USB cable, but ONLY when connected wirelessly using Bluetooth.

Since IOS 12 I have noticed less disconnects than previously. It has happened though since the update. I am also thinking its related to the quality of the cellular/LTE signal. It seems when you drop below a certain level, the CarPlay just freaks out and drops the Bluetooth signal (since the update to IOS 12, it seems to reconnect after a delay). I am wondering if this is something internal in how the antennas work? I remember in the past that wifi, cellular and bluetooth had some ability to negatively influence each other, but am not sure of the details.

This morning, I was able to test out Google Maps and while it was a positive experience, it was just barely positive. I had quite a bit of delay, disconnecting and lack of screen responsiveness while using music streaming and Google Maps to navigate. In the past, I have also noticed that Apple Maps seems to have a negative effect on the connection. If I only stream music over CarPlay and use the in dash GPS (which is actually very good) and do not use mapping in CarPlay, I definitely seem to experience less disconnecting. At least Google Maps knows that my street exists and that I am not driving in the woods...

I am using an iPhone 6s for this testing.

It is an Apple thing, in settings.

Go to Settings -> Screen Time, scroll to the bottom and disable the whole thing. It’s the only way I could get it to stop interfering with CarPlay.

This seems to make sense because it was just after Apple released an update the added Screen Time to the OS, that CarPlay started having this disconnect issue.

Good luck.

I have the exact same problem with my 2018 BMW M550I and an I Phone X. I have taken my car to the dealer 6 times and they blame Apple and basically have given up. I have called Apple and they say it is a BMW problem. Meanwhile I can't even use my phone when I drive my car and doing so as you pointed out is extremely dangerous. This is beyond ridiculous!

I finally stopped using the Audi cable which came with my car and it's way better. Car play still seems to disconnect but waaaay less frequently. For example, i was out an about boston and the burbs yesterday for about 2.5 hours of driving and it only disconnected 1 time. been using this cable for about a week now. i'm far less frustrated now - thanks to various folks in this group who suggested trying this fix. happy for now....2017 Audi A4 Carplay user.

I have done everything humanly possible. even had the Radio changed out.

Same issues. I have been going thru this since Waze came on board.

I have installed and uninstalled Apps, WiFi on and off, etc.

I think it's something in the iOS 12.x resources running while CarPlay is active. I have even turned off all the Notifications. no change. I'm on the Test team. I have reported numerous Bug Reports. They have fixed some of the Bugs.

Nothing with CarPlay issues.

Has anybody had any issues with Android running on CarPlay ?

After struggling I gave up my 2018 Toyota and now have a Honda Accord. Everything works perfectly! Car play and all work perfectly. I also use an Apple Xr. The only conclusion I can offer the struggle is caused by the vehicle and manufacturers not producing a fault free product. When the manufactures invest and correct problems, then we will have successful connections

After weeks with no issues the disconnecting returned. I noticed it happening when Apple maps pushes a notification "XXX minutes to your home address" message, another person had mentioned uninstalling Apple Maps was the solution for them.

I went to

Settings > Maps

Set "Location" to Never

Siri & Search to Off

Notifications to Off

Show Parked Location to Off

Turned off Cellular Data

It's been a few days with no disconnects after doing that.

Because others have asked when I do have disconnect issues if I put my phone in airplane mode the disconnecting stops.

I'm not sure if this will be any help at all, but I previously posted about my 3 month old Subaru Impreza having the disconnect among other issues with the CarPlay. Took it to the dealer today, had a software update done, and it seems to be working now like it should. I'm knocking on wood as I type, but so far so good after an hour of being connected. Before the update, this morning it disconnected 3x in 10 minutes.
