Photos importing both original as well as edited photos.

Photos on Mac (MBP 2011, MacOS 10.13.3) is importing both original as well as edited copies of photos from iPhone (6 and X, iOS 11.2.5). This was not a problem for last 3 years but is persistent since September/October. I want only one copy of photos on my iPhone to be imported - edited or original, whichever is on my iPhone too. Any advise would be appreciated! Thanks.

iPhone X, iOS 11.2.5, null

Your system versions do not match. With an iPhone running iOS 11 you should be running High Sierra on the Mac. The problem is, that Sierra does not support the effects created by the camera or Photos.app on an iOS 11 device. Since Photos 2.0 on Sierra cannot recreate the edits applied by a camera on iOS 11 it has to send two photos, one with the effects and one without. if you upgrade to High Sierra with Photos 3.0 the two Photos versions should be compatible again.

If you are importing photos using a USB connection, Photos will import all photos that have been saved to the camera roll. Are you using a photo editing extension to edit the photos? That will save new photos to the camera roll.

You will also see duplicates you used filters, that are no longer supported im MacOS 10.13 High Sierra. The old filters will result in additional versions.

You will have to delete the duplicates manually, because they have been imported as second original, so they will not show, when you search for "Photo is edited" in a smart album.

The edited versions should be showing an "E" appended to the image number in the filename, if I remember correctly. Perhaps you could search with a smart album (File > New Smart album")with the rule "match all:" "Filename includes E." and "Camera Model is iPhone 6"

I am using the USB to sync my photos. I do not use any third party editing tool and use only the Apple Photos editing capabilities on my iPhone.

I just checked the old photos on my MacBook - every photo Ive ever imported from my iPhone is now split into original and edited. It is probably some setting on MacBook level that is causing the issue, however I have made changes to none.
