Thanks for confirming my suspicions everyone. I usually just hand up on these guys, but this time I was curious as to what would happen if I just pressed 1 to be connected to Apple Support. After I hung up on the call I queried Google for "Apple icloud breach" and the only legitimate useful response I got was for an Apple Discussion Group question that had been closed by Apple because it was really old and if I wanted to re-open it to post again..... and so, it having been long enough since the previous question and wondering if there was anything new on this subject..... I did.
Apple will never initiate contact with you.
The only thing new on this subject is that phony tech support calls happen much more often and some are actually spoofing legitimate Apple Store phone numbers.
