How can I add a category in numbers?

Hi community,

I want to create categories in mac numbers 2017, version 4.3.1. I want to be able to 'group' some rows together in order to keep a better overview in very long spreadsheets.

In Excel the function I am referring to looks like this:

User uploaded file

I know that this function was available in older versions of numbers and that this function is also available in current Excel versions. I also know that this function is widely used, so I really don't understand why apple doesn't include this function anymore ore makes it that hard to find it...

Thanks for your help,

Markus

Hi Markus,

Where has this feature gone in Numbers 2017?

It was not included in the rebuild of Numbers '09 to versions 5 and 6, and only Apple knows why.

In the "new, rebuilt from the floor up" Numbers, we can use the powerful Filter feature.

This may not be what you want, but other readers may find this helpful.

Here is a reduced version of your database:

User uploaded file

The single-cell table "Filter Control" has a Pop-Up Menu

User uploaded file

Formula in B2 of "Very Long Table" (and Fill Down)

=IF(Filter Control::A$1="Don't Filter","Show",IF(Filter Control::A$1=$A2,"Show",""))

User uploaded file

Like this:

User uploaded file

Now apply a Filter:

User uploaded file

You can hide the "Show?" column.

If you think this is a useful approach, we can work on this and extend it to include filters for other columns with sub-totals in Footer Rows.

Regards,

Ian.

Hi, no, not really. What I want to do is to basically 'group' several rows and be able to 'fold' them up, like it is possible with the group function in excel and category function in earlier version of numbers. Attached again two screenshots to better describe what I want to do:

in Excel:

In Numbers 2009:

My spreadsheet is very long, so main idea is to have a better overview about category headline and if needed, just unfold the category and view the data inside this category.
