How can I add a category in numbers?

Where has this feature gone in Numbers 2017?

It was not included in the rebuild of Numbers '09 to versions 5 and 6, and only Apple knows why.

In the "new, rebuilt from the floor up" Numbers, we can use the powerful Filter feature.

This may not be what you want, but other readers may find this helpful.

Here is a reduced version of your database:

The single-cell table "Filter Control" has a Pop-Up Menu

Formula in B2 of "Very Long Table" (and Fill Down)

Now apply a Filter:

You can hide the "Show?" column.

If you think this is a useful approach, we can work on this and extend it to include filters for other columns with sub-totals in Footer Rows.

Numbers can’t do what you describe directly. However, you can add column(s) to the left (or right) with a category entered in each line, and then just filter on the category column(s).

Unlike Excel, Numbers isn’t really designed to handle large datasets.

You can hide or filter rows but you can't "group" them in Numbers. You can give feedback to Apple in your menu via Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback.

Would SUMIF over categories (in another, small table) do what you want?
