iOS 11.3 - Delete Message Confirmation

The newest iOS 11.3 update enables a feature that asks if you're sure you want to delete a text message/iMessage once you choose the delete option. It's making me crazy! I tried searching through the settings to remove this deletion confirmation, but can't find anything on the topic. Is there any way to remove this feature?

Every so often Apple comes up with a "Feature" that so small and so annoying that begs the question as to whether they ever consult with a user. YES! Delete confirmation is an unnecessary addition to IOS and we can only hope that some security patch will remove it

No, Apple doesn't consult with users. Instead, they see what users do with their phones and often introduce features based on what they perceive as a real need. This is one such feature. Daily, multiple users come here to these user only forums begging for help to recover an accidentally deleted text message. In most cases, the only way to get the message back is to restore from backup, which often people simply don't have.

So, this very small change was introduced to help the countless thousands of users to ensure when they use swipe to delete that they truly do want to delete the message.

Are you aware there is another simple method to delete messages that will not ask you to confirm you want to delete? Yes, Apple provided the best of BOTH worlds to users. Simply use the Edit/Tap Messages(s)/Tap Trash icon and voila, message(s) delete without confirmation. That can't be any more cumbersome could it? It's three steps, just like it was before on swipe to delete.

Yes, I'm not sure why people think this is a non-issue. As it was, you had to swipe left, which THEN revealed the delete option. Then you had to TAP to actually delete. That two-step process should be enough to stop people from accidentally deleting something. But now, we have a THIRD step to perform - hitting delete AGAIN.

Maybe people simply live their life in Messages and if they delete a message they didn't mean to then horrible things will happen. I don't. But again, if you flub up a two-step delete process, you can just as easily flub up a 3-step process. All we need is an option to turn off that second "do you really want to delete" option? This kind of process has existed on Windows trash for years, and it's always been an annoyance to me that I couldn't opt to turn off that last-ditch reminder.

Once again, we get you don't like or understand why anyone else would like this feature.

Because for a lot of people who accidentally delete a text message (you know that other 99%) say off of their iPhone that contains critical information they can move to their computer or their iPad and retrieve the information. With the adoption of iCloud Messages it will remove the text from all of their devices when they delete it.

Just so everyone that comes here is clear, there are mainly six people on this thread that think this change is good (gail from Maine, Lawrence Finch, LACAllen, rbrylawski, IdrisSeabright, and Philly_Phan 😕 - I may have misspelled some of them). For those six people who apparently know a lot of people who consciously followed the previous 2-step process and deleted messages, or did it themselves (and some have admitted), then said it was an accident, this is a great thing for them. I'm not really sure how though, because as I pointed out earlier, the visual interface of this new third step doesn't show you what you are deleting and give you a chance to double check, unless you hit "cancel" and start all over.

Most everyone else that finds this threat hates the change and merely wants one thing - for Apple to provide an option to turn it off so it will work the way it did before. 😉

The arguments the six have given for why this is the greatest thing are all over the place, while the arguments for why it is not and Apple should at least give us an option are simple - it wastes our time and breaks a LOT of muscle memory doing something completely unnecessary (going from a 2-step process to a 3-step process just to delete a message).

So just a word of warning, if you come here because you googled looking for a way to stop this behavior, like most of the rest of us probably did, you will learn you can't change it. Also, one of those six will probably tell you it's a great feature and it works just like Apple planned it - so deal with it and you are a crazy person to voice your opinion here or to complain. 😐 You should also know how to provide Apple feedback on this, and that link has been provided many times in this thread. So yes, send that feedback to Apple to please provide an option to turn that extra step off.

I’m not a blindly faithful minion.

Are you seeing the pattern yet?

Sulking and lashing out at those trying to help the community gets your oh-so-narrow minded contributions removed.

Our posts stay within the terms of the community. Yours haven't been. Yours are insulting and derogatory.

And I’m pointing out that many people have also asked why this was changed.

And pretty every one of them are ranting in the wrong venue.

Clearly stated (again) for all of you: Apple does not debate or answer "why" questions here, per the terms that you, perhaps blindly, have agreed to.

Their yard. Their rules.

APPLE PLEASE GET RID OF THIS USELESS "FEATURE!"

How many people accidentally slide a message far enough to the left to delete it? Oh and then press "delete" after doing so? My twerking skills are sub sub sub par if this happens more often than I would think.

Someone else who posted before reading the thread they posted to. If you had bothered you would know:

1. This is a user to user forum not read by Apple, so posting here is a waste of time.

2. Other users don’t care about your opinion

3. The right place to make your opinion known to Apple is on just about every page of this thread. It is left as an exercise to the reader to find it.

What I’m saying is that they DON’T keep these annoying little features, they make changes when upgrading the iPhone so you go and buy the new and improved version

So you are saying that if you buy a new phone (hardware) it won’t have this SOFTWARE feature. Utterly ridiculous and nonsense. Please give an example where your scenario has played out in the past.

One more reason we need Samsung and google to provide competition to

Really? And another person who didn't read this thread. If you had, you'd have learned Samsung, Google, Pixel etc., ALL make you confirm delete for a text message. In fact, they ALWAYS have and Apple was just late to the confirmation party. But sure you can buy one and still have the same great feature to deal with if you want.

There is no issue that has been fixed, and not sure what syning your test messages with your watch has to do with the additional "Delete" requirement for removing conversations.

You should try starting your own thread with your own question. Also, do not assume that anyone knows what you are referring to. Provide a clear and complete question describing the issue you having and any related relevant material.

think that Apple isn't aware of what's being said here.

Aware of? Most certainly. Influenced by? Highly Doubtful.

Billions of Messages are sent/received each day. Even tens of thousands (doubtful) of unhappy, disgruntled against-their-will-double-swipers won't likely cause a rethink of this feature by Apple.

The needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few.
