I am considering adding an Apple TV 4K and HomePod to my AV package. Do these two devices "speak" to each other? Can I play my TV audio on the HomePod speaker instead of having two different speaker systems.

The Apple TV 4K can AirPlay Audio to the HomePod over Wifi.
Unless your actual TV is Airplay compatible it cannot send audio to the HomePod.
The HomePod itself does not connect to any device directly. But can be used as an audio output option on compatible devices.

So, yes, as long as you connect both devices to the same Wifi network, they can do what you want.
