How to change family plan organizer when your spouse dies

I had AT&T shut down the phone number for my wife who passed away but now I cannot change anything for our family plan because she was the organizer and I cannot get passed the two factor authorization which requires her phone number. It will not let me change device or use email address which I have access to. This stinks.

I spoke to a few "geniuses" at Apple whose reply was to get a court order to change it. That's very expensive and takes up to 12 weeks!!!

AT&T should tell those grieving about this important matter since they work with Apple so closely

Most people do not think of this when in mourning.

Any ideas?

I'm trying to get AT&T to reactive her old number for a day so I can do what I need to do which is make me the family organizer. Apple needs to let partners change that info without needing a court order or the phone number!

You could have everyone leave the family and then you could set it up again. Purchases made by your wife would be missing.

Family Sharing - Leave

Family Sharing

Take the device, the original purchase receipt, a copy of the death certificate, a copy of the will (if applicable) and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store.

or contact Apple ID Support. They will need to see the receipt also.

When you state that you cannot get past Two-Factor Authentication, do you mean you can't get a verification code because her only Trusted device was her phone?

If so, does the phone still get Wifi? Even if it doesn't have a phone number associated with it anymore, it should be able to connect to your Wifi.

If you can do that, then, with her Apple ID signed into the phone, go to Settings>her name>Password & Security, scroll to the bottom and tap on Get Verification Code.

Can you explain exactly what you are trying to do, and what issue you are running into specifically?

You can also sign into her Apple ID (Apple - My Apple ID) via a computer (getting the verification code as described above), and then add additional phone numbers to her trusted numbers. Trusted numbers don't have to be iOS devices, androids work as well, and they don't even have to be a mobile device - you can set up a landline number that you would receive a call with the code. The phone also does not have to be registered to her name. Any phone number that can receive an SMS or a phone call can be used.

Very sorry about your loss,

You didn't indicate that you don't have her device either. You had just stated that the number was disconnected. If you don't have the trusted device, then Apple provides these instructions for getting into the Apple ID:

If you can't access any of your devices, you can also try to reset your Apple ID or password from a friend or family member’s iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Open the Find My iPhone app. If a Sign In screen appears, tap Forgot Apple ID or Password, then follow the onscreen steps. Don't see a Sign In screen? Tap Sign Out, then choose Forgot Apple ID or Password.

You want to gain access to her Apple account so you can add additional Trusted Phone Numbers that you can get a verification code on.

Since she was the Organizer on Family Sharing, you may want to continue to use her ID going forward so that you don't lost your shared subscriptions. Or, you can contact Apple to see if there is anything they can do to transfer those subscriptions to your Apple ID. The data won't be transferable, but they may have a way to apply a credit to your account so that you don't have to pay twice for the same storage. Not sure either way.
