Calendar Error

"Holi" just showed up on March 2, 2018 on my calendar on all of my devices and I can't remove it. Any ideas?

Agreed! Every culture/religion/country has their own variations of spring. Let’s keep calendar inputs directly relevant and minimal. I’m Jewish and the vast majority of my holidays including our Purim are not indicated. But the vast majority of Americans aren’t Jewish. So that makes sense. Neither are they Hindu.

You are correct, Purim (yesterday) is missing. But Passover is there, as is Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah.

In terms of religions practiced in the US, the 4 largest are Christianity (two different calendars, both of which are represented), Judaism, Hinduism and Islam (in that order). That's why religious holidays for these have their major holidays listed. You can argue that Purim is also a major holiday in Judaism, but there is equal argument that it is not. Likewise for Sukkot (there's also a good argument for excluding Hanukkah, but I don't want to get into a theological debate about it any more than about Christmas). And only a few of the dozens of Hindu and Muslim holidays are listed, again, the most important.

Friday, March 2, is the Hindu holiday of Holi. There are major celebrations scheduled in many US cities (one about a mile from me in the NJ suburbs) that will probably disrupt traffic, so it's useful to know about it.

But if you don't want to see any of them, and do want to see more Jewish holidays, just uncheck the US Holidays calendar and subscribe to a calendar that reflects your needs.

I wish you could subscribe to US Holidays but also have the ability to delete the ones you don't want.

Calendars that you subscribe to can't be changed. And, unless you're lucky enough to find one that has only the exact holidays on it that you want, you're going to have to either live with ones you don't care about (as I do for Easter) or add some that you do. It's just like when you buy a paper calendar. Your stuck with whatever the publisher decided to put on it plus whatever you handwrite in.

Except that it's not just like a paper calendar.

You have missed the point. The point is, anything published is controlled by someone else.

You can update and change your calendar as much as you want. You can add holidays that suit you. And you can subscribe to all manner of calendars. But, just like you don't get to decide which articles come in this months version of National Geographic, you don't get to decide which holidays other people put in the calendars they make. You can decide you like NG and buy it or, if you don't like the articles, go buy Cosmopolitan instead. You're still personalizing your coffee table.

Except that it's not just like a paper calendar. It's an app on an advanced electronic device that is capable of continual updates if necessary. One more thing to consider is that you often need to know when a religious or federal holiday occurs in order to make plans around it. For instance, if people start celebrating Holi in the U.S., you should definitely stay out of their way since they have gone from throwing around the traditional natural colored powders like turmeric to using synthetics. You want to avoid getting that crap all over you and breathing it in! (See? I've already learned something. Thanks, Apple!)

Holi is a "foreign" holiday (a Hindu spring festival celebrated in February or March in honor of Krishna) so it's not an error, out of respect to all Apple people who celebrate Holi. So we learned something. However, if they're going to include every holiday, they should allow us to edit, i.e., I want to remove ALL religious holidays. So for now, I opt out of ALL Holidays and put in my own. Since when is Tax Day a holiday anyway? Happy Holi-day to you : )

A "bug" is something that doesn't work the way it was designed. As Apple clearly intentionally put Holi on the calendar, it is not a bug. When you get to it, you will also notice that Diwali is also on the calendar. As is Eid al-Fitr, which is not a Hindu holiday, but is an important Muslim holiday. Maybe you missed Passover, which is also on the US Holidays calendar, the day before Easter. That's not a bug, either.

And Apple does. It's very easy to create your own calendar where you can add or not add whatever holidays you choose.

There are countless calendar subscriptions available from calDAV servers all over the world. Among the abundance of them, if you truly cannot find one that meets your unique requirements, then you can always create your own—one that meets only your needs or the needs of your desired congregation, and excluding all others.

Learn how to subscribe to existing calendars by reading Use iCloud calendar subscriptions - Apple Support. If you want to create your own calDAV server, you can. Read https://www.calendarserver.org/

Wow, so many people getting their knickers in a twist, as someone put it earlier! The point is not that Easter or Kwanzaa or solstice or Holi or Whitsuntide Day should or should not be included on a calendar. If every conceivable cultural celebration and sectarian holiday were taken into account there would be room for nothing else.

In theory, I agree with you. However, I am absolutely appalled by the alleged Christians who were so upset that Easter was removed but who are now complaining that any non-Christian religious holiday is "not American". The level of lack of loving thy neighbor that demonstrates is mind boggling and sad.

I just want to be able to personalize MY calendar without having to install a third party app.

You don't have to install any other app. You just subscribe to a holiday calendar that has the holidays (or sports teams, or awards ceremonies) you want. Or, you personalize the included app by turning off the included U.S. holidays and add your own. I think subscribing to another holiday calendar is probably easier, though.
