What’s up with the US holidays calendar

Just figured out how to. The only way to get rid of these newly added holidays showing On the Apple calendar is to Unsubribe/uncheck the Apple ‘US Holidays’ that now comes standard in IOS apparently, and then subscribe to a 3rd party calender that doesn't have every holiday throughout the world. My only interest in doing this was to have the minimal standard Holidays on the calender that would usually involve: time off for work, restaurant closures, bank closures, ect. I would think most agree the new PC (political correct) Apple calender makes it inconvenient and clutters things up, esp. on the iPhone, trying to see what that dot means only to find it has no relevance to the days activities. Here’s a solution on how to fix for now if anybody is interested.

1) On the IOS device>select the Calender App>select Calenders at bottom>uncheck US Holidays-all US holidays will now be removed from showing on your Calender.

2)

Copy:

webcal://www.calendarlabs.com/ical-calendar/ics/76/US_Holidays.ics

then Email the link (or another3rd party calender link of your choice) to the IOS device you want to add it to. Click the new US calender link from your email and IOS will give an option to add to calender. Add the calender. And that is it, new calender will show with the ‘standard USobserved holidays’ as in past generations of IOS Calenders.

Man. This is exactly why I came here. The US Holidays calendar used to be the traditional US observed holiday/celebrations. I get that the world is smaller now, but if my calendar had every global celebration, I wouldn't have room for anything else.

Remove/unsubscribe from all the holiday calendars you have ('on my mac', iCloud, gmail, etc.), go to Calendars on your iOS device, click Calendars at the bottom of the screen, and uncheck the US Holidays under OTHER (it's built in, you can't remove/delete it).

Then subscribe to webcal://files.apple.com/calendars/US32Holidays.ics with iCloud. This calendar has the traditional US holidays many are looking for.

I spoke I spoke tp a supervisor at Apple was told no solution from them. They have one calendar includes all holidays, not just traditional US. The only solution they could offer is load another calendar & disable theirs, which is what I have done!

Apple removed the religious holidays from the calendar. Then some so-called Christians (as opposed to the Christians who believe in loving their neighbors) pitched a fit. The way to remove it from the calendar is to not use Apple’s provided holiday calendar and find or make one that suits a person’s individual preferences. If a person subscribes to the Apple US Holidays calendar then they cannot pick or choose which of those holidays to see, it’s an all or nothing deal.

But as has been said, there are countless holiday calendars or apps out there that may allow for further customization than the built in one.

Unfortunately, Apple does not suggest the solutions in the preview of this discussion and it takes a long time to dig through 16 pages to find it. Well, since a good proportion of African Slaves brought to the USA were followers of Islam, I’d imagine it has been celebrated by some in the USA for at least a hundred or more years. There were also Moors here long before the USA became the USA - they mostly migrated out of Spain where they were essentially persecuted and expelled. So at least as long as US Federal Employees have celebrated Christmas, which became a federal employee holiday in 1870.

The very label “US Holiday” is whatever anyone in the USA chooses to call it. If a US Citizen celebrates it, it is a “US Holiday” to them. There are zero official US National Holidays in this country - not one. Anyone, Apple Inc. included, can create a subscription calendar with whatever events they wish to include.

While many have argued there are no official US holidays, there are traditional ones; these non-coincidentally happen to be reflected in the federal holiday and corporate calendars. Because the US was not established as a Muslim or Buddhist country (and has not yet become one), holidays for those religions are not included on such calendars. Agree, Apple has taken liberties with the "US Holidays" calendar and would be more correct to name it "World Holidays" or "Apple-recognized Holidays."

As others have suggested, creating your own calendar is the best way to have a holiday calendar that is meaningful to you. One approach is to export the Apple US Holidays calendar, import it into a personal holidays calendar (which retains "repeat" settings), and then delete the holidays you don't want.

BTW, Before February 22 Apple's US Holidays calendar was just what you are asking for. But there was a huge outcry on social media about the fact that Easter was not on it, so Apple capitulated and added back religious holidays.

“US Holidays” does not refer only nor specifically to the US Federal Government Holiday Schedule. Some third party calendar apps do offer a US Federal Holiday schedule as a discrete holiday series. And technically the US Federal Government Holidays are not national holidays since Congress only has powers to create holidays for federal institutions. So strictly speaking, the USA has no legally recognized national holidays.

And there are far more holidays commonly recognized throughout the USA than merely the Federal Government ones.

It’s one of many holidays included with the US holidays calendar. It’s an all or nothing thing. You’d need to go to ‘calendars’ on the bottom middle of your calendar and unsubscribe from the US Holidays then go out and look for one that is customized to your preferences, or go out and enter all of them yourself so you only have the ones you want.

There are hundreds of calendar apps in the App Store, with numerous calendar subscription options. I’d bet however that ever single subscription calendar is going to have some days included that some people will not want or like.

If you really want a personally selected list of days, your only real option is to put those days into your calendar yourself.

Since there literally is no such thing as a legal (as in enacted by Congress) National Holiday in the USA, subscription “US Holiday” calendars will include whatever the content creator chooses.

with respect, people aren’t forced to use it, it is simply on by default and they can turn it off at any point in time. SImply go into the calendar, tap on calendars at the bottom middle and tap on the blue circle by the US Holidays and it’s gone.

THen there are dozens to hundreds of apps out there for those that wish something else. Or a person could use the default holiday calendar as a guide, make the ones that they choose to observe, put them on annual repeat and only deal with it once a year when they need to research those holidays that move from year to year such as the Easters which are based on the full moon.

...who gets to decide which ones are on everyone else’s calendar? That’s potentially offensive simply by virtue of the fact that someone else is choosing what’s if value and what isn’t. But more importantly ... it’s just bad customer service.

Apple gets to choose, that's who. It's their calendar. And you are allowed to choose which holidays pertain to you. Uncheck the Apple US Holidays calendar subscription and subscribe to one that you like. If Apple only gave you the option to use their calendar, then you wouldn't have a choice. But Apple allows you to subscribe to any subscription calendar and it automatically syncs to your Calendar app. The choice is yours.

Well good for you! That's exactly what we have been suggesting for eons. Unsubscribe to Apples US Holidays app (uncheck it), and subscribe to one that suits your fancy. BTW - there are Buddhist holidays on the calendar.
