What’s up with the US holidays calendar

What the **** is up with the “US Holiday” calendar? When did holi, Cinco de Mayo, Ramadan and other non-US holidays get put on this calendar? Is there a calendar with the 11 US holidays one can subscribe too?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1, iTunes 11

Just figured out how to. The only way to get rid of these newly added holidays showing On the Apple calendar is to Unsubribe/uncheck the Apple ‘US Holidays’ that now comes standard in IOS apparently, and then subscribe to a 3rd party calender that doesn't have every holiday throughout the world. My only interest in doing this was to have the minimal standard Holidays on the calender that would usually involve: time off for work, restaurant closures, bank closures, ect. I would think most agree the new PC (political correct) Apple calender makes it inconvenient and clutters things up, esp. on the iPhone, trying to see what that dot means only to find it has no relevance to the days activities. Here’s a solution on how to fix for now if anybody is interested.

1) On the IOS device>select the Calender App>select Calenders at bottom>uncheck US Holidays-all US holidays will now be removed from showing on your Calender.

2)

Copy:

webcal://www.calendarlabs.com/ical-calendar/ics/76/US_Holidays.ics

then Email the link (or another3rd party calender link of your choice) to the IOS device you want to add it to. Click the new US calender link from your email and IOS will give an option to add to calender. Add the calender. And that is it, new calender will show with the ‘standard USobserved holidays’ as in past generations of IOS Calenders.

Hope this helps others.

Veteran’s Day (as Kurt stated, a rebranding of a holiday from another country)

Actually, I'm the one who said that. More evidence that Kurt and I may possibly be the same person?

I am one of those odd U.S. citizens who celebrates Remembrance Day on November 11. Therefore, I'm now declaring "Remembrance Day" as an additional U.S. holiday. Sadly, I seem to have lost my poppy.

Even Remembrance Day isn't really an American holiday; is a rebranding of Armistice Day, the day that the European powers signed the armistice that ended the World War in 1918, to be continued in 1938. Ironically, it was signed in the 11th month on the 11th day at the 11th hour. Everyone knew this was coming weeks in advance, but they kept killing each other up until the last minute.

And cynically the armistice was established because so many millions of battle-aged young (mostly) men were dead or disabled that there weren't enough left to continue fighting, so they had to wait 20 years until a new crop of eager young men reached draft age.

The point isn't the holidays, but the simple fact that the calendar cannot be deleted. I know I can uncheck it so I don't see it, but why should I have to do that every time I go through my calendars to view just one calendar?

You don't. You only have to uncheck it once. It will stay unchecked and not pollute the purity of your idea of a U.S. calendar. Will you still know, deep in your heart, that data for those foreign holidays resides, somewhere, in the innards of your phones even though you don't see it? I suppose but only if you can't think of anything better to worry about (e.g. climate change, gun violence in U.S. schools, or the fact that Survivor hasn't yet been canceled).

That's not true. I have several 11 of my own calendars and this one that I can't delete. I will click on "hide all" and then select the calendar that I want to view. Now instead of just clicking on "show all" to show my 11 calendars, I have to now also click on the holidays calendar to uncheck it. I know this is a first world problem, but again, my point is that we should be allowed to delete the calendar completely from our iphones/ipads.

Why do you "need" to delete it? Can't you simply refrain from turning it back on?

This is the same kind of specious argument a person could use to say, "I really, really hate xxx TV show. But because it's there on Thursday nights, I can't help myself and watch it. I should have the option to completely remove it because I have no self control."

As you have not defined "most people" I will provide my definition: 90% or 9 out of 10 people. By that standard your argument falls apart completely. There is no reputable survey, however, that uses the term "most." So you cannot quote a survey as a tool to gauge* and define it. Only morally corrupt politicians use terms like "most" in public utterances.

*"Gage" is a kind of fruit, so I'm assuming that is not what you meant.

Are you familiar with the First Law of Holes? When you are in one, stop digging.

I mean, surveys support “most people” opinions. By your logic Apple is “one person” deciding it too. Though, now we’ve gone off track from the original post which is “where did all these ‘new’ events come from on my US Holiday’s calendar?”

Has there ever been a survey on what people think is a “US Holiday”? And yes, Apple is a single corporate entity offer up their optional subscription calendar. Anyone is free to make up and distribute their own subscription calendar if they wish to. No one is compelled to use anyone else’s subscription calendar, but they do not get to dictate what any provider chooses to put in theirs.

And most surveys are nothing more than a good measure of whatever agenda the survey maker decided to champion. Especially political or news surveys, which are notorialy biased.

That’s the whole point of free or paid subscription content - if you choose to subscribe, then you choose to use the providers content. If you don’t like the providers content, don‘t subscribe! But the provider has every right to choose the content they provide.

And yet “political correctness” has nothing at all to do with what any American(s) choose to recognize as a holiday observed by some Americans, somewhere in the USA.

Not to mention as well that “political correctness” also has nothing at all to do with what a private person or a company chooses to put in their offered and purely optional subscription content.

So anything that annoys you is "political correctness"? Sorry, I didn't realize you were in charge of that.

As Congress is not empowered to create U.S. holidays, I've come up with a definition. A U.S. holiday is 1) any holiday that is traditionally celebrated with chocolate or other delicious food, 2) any holiday that recognizes the service of an individual or group to the country. A U.S. holiday is not any holiday whose primary purpose is to sell things (exceptions made for number one above). It is understood that not everyone will approve of all holidays. It is therefore, the patriotic duty of people who don't approve of a holiday to work on that holiday.

"Political Correctness" is a euphemism for "I'm a bigot"

It is a remarkably stupid phrase.

Much like politicians themselves throwing around the phrase “common sense” which also only applies to those using it to ascribe to their own personal viewpoint or opinion.
