What’s up with the US holidays calendar

What the **** is up with the “US Holiday” calendar? When did holi, Cinco de Mayo, Ramadan and other non-US holidays get put on this calendar? Is there a calendar with the 11 US holidays one can subscribe too?

iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1, iTunes 11

Just figured out how to. The only way to get rid of these newly added holidays showing On the Apple calendar is to Unsubribe/uncheck the Apple ‘US Holidays’ that now comes standard in IOS apparently, and then subscribe to a 3rd party calender that doesn't have every holiday throughout the world. My only interest in doing this was to have the minimal standard Holidays on the calender that would usually involve: time off for work, restaurant closures, bank closures, ect. I would think most agree the new PC (political correct) Apple calender makes it inconvenient and clutters things up, esp. on the iPhone, trying to see what that dot means only to find it has no relevance to the days activities. Here’s a solution on how to fix for now if anybody is interested.

1) On the IOS device>select the Calender App>select Calenders at bottom>uncheck US Holidays-all US holidays will now be removed from showing on your Calender.

2)

Copy:

webcal://www.calendarlabs.com/ical-calendar/ics/76/US_Holidays.ics

then Email the link (or another3rd party calender link of your choice) to the IOS device you want to add it to. Click the new US calender link from your email and IOS will give an option to add to calender. Add the calender. And that is it, new calender will show with the ‘standard USobserved holidays’ as in past generations of IOS Calenders.

Hope this helps others.

Subscription content is subject to copyright. You cannot later content copyright to someone else. That’s how subscription content works, and how the international standard format for subscription calendars works.

And if all you’re wanting to do is edit someone else’s version of holidays observed in the USA, why not just manually enter which ones you care about in your calendar. How hard is to enter yourself the 10 calendar entries needed to match the US Federal Employee holiday schedule? It takes at most all of <10 minutes to do that, once a year, yourself, if those are the only holidays you care about. Why bother with a subscription calendar at all?

I agree. My calendar is now littered with pointless holidays, many of which are either irrelevant or I never heard of. There NEEDS to be a way to edit this. I don’t need

Lunar New Year

Holi (?)

Orthodox Easter

First Day of Ramadan

Eid al-Fitr (?)

Juneteenth (?)

Eid al-Adha (?)

Ashura (?)

Diwali (?)

Etc

I’ve used this calander for years, this is all new and it’s cluttering it up.

How do I find/add a better calendar with less nonsense?

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday observed by Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and Americans celebrating the victory over the French who were trying to supply Confederate forces in the American civil war at the battle of Pueblo. In 2005 Congress enacted a concurent resolution calling on the US President to issue a proclamation for the United Stated to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

So there you go: Military victory over a confederacy who tried to break apart America so they could start their own country to keep slaves and the slave trade as viable commerce and the Mexican Army cut their supply lines off to hasten their defeat so I can think of no better way to celebrate that defeat than Tequila and beer.

I agree a lot of this holidays aren’t even traditional, how could they be U.S. holidays with no U.S. origin. I want to know why Apple forces such a thing to their customers with no warning, or any way to change it.

Let's see. New Years, origin is not U.S., Christmas, origin, not U.S.. Even Veteran's Day is a rebranding of Remembrance Day, which is not a U.S. holiday. So, even some of the Federal holidays don't have a U.S. origin. And, some that do, have been removed from their traditional days. When I was a kid, we celebrated Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday on the actual anniversary of their births. The holidays were about them and history, not about giving everyone a three day weekend. So, arguing tradition is a bit silly in this context.

Now I have to remember to uncheck that calendar every time I go into the calendar and sort my appts

All you have to do is uncheck it and none of those holidays will show up on your calendar. You don't have to keep unchecking it. Once will do.

And yes, being upset by a handful of holidays appearing on your calendar is pretty ridiculous. On that, at least, we agree.

The point isn't the holidays, but the simple fact that the calendar cannot be deleted. I know I can uncheck it so I don't see it, but why should I have to do that every time I go through my calendars to view just one calendar? If we would all go to apple feedback and give them our opinions in a kind way, maybe they'll add it to their list of updates so we can delete that calendar.

That's not true. I have several 11 of my own calendars and this one that I can't delete. I will click on "hide all" and then select the calendar that I want to view. Now instead of just clicking on "show all" to show my 11 calendars, I have to now also click on the holidays calendar to uncheck it. I know this is a first world problem, but again, my point is that we should be allowed to delete the calendar completely from our iphones/ipads.

Yes, what I said is still true. If you uncheck the calendar, it stays unchecked until you check it again. If you select check all, you're checking it again.
